Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking an Operating Room nurse to provide direct patient care in a fast-paced perioperative environment. You will scrub and/or circulate for multiple surgical services, educate patients and families, and collaborate with surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure safety and quality care.

Minimum qualifications include an RN license with a Nursing Diploma/Associate’s; 2-5 years OR experience is preferred, and a Bachelor’s in Nursing is desirable.

Qualifications

• Nursing Diploma or Associate’s degree required.
• RN licensure required.
• 2-5 years perioperative nursing experience preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
• CNOR certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Educates patients and families about the communication process during the perioperative procedure and available resources.
• Serves as liaison between physician, patient and family; scrubbing and/or circulating for surgical services.
• Ensures safety during procedures and prepares instruments, supplies and equipment per safety requirements.
• Maintains sterile technique and promptly identifies potential complications.
• Participates in safety, quality, and regulatory compliance activities and supports ongoing professional development.

The Operating Room at BJH is separated into five Pods that each align with different surgical specialties:

• Pod 1: Pelvic specialties: gynecology, urology, colorectal, and general surgery
• Pod 2: Trauma, trauma services (wound treatment), reconstructive surgery for ortho (hip/knee replacement, orthoscopic knee and shoulder) and plastics repair
• Pod 3: Cardiac, transplant, vascular, hepatobiliary
• Pod 4: Ophthalmology, Ortho, ENT, MIS, Plastics, and General Oncology
• Pod 5: Ortho, Spine, Neuro, and bigger ENT cases (example teeth extractions)

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within guidelines for standards of nursing care to inpatients and outpatients in the perioperative environment established by AORN.

Responsibilities

Educates patients and their families about the communication process during the procedure, what to expect, and any support resources, as appropriate. Serves as liaison between physician and the patient and family.Demonstrates competence and independent practice in roles of scrubbing and/or circulating for all HSO-defined surgical services.Uses established safety techniques in preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures; provides and sets up necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for different types of surgeries or procedures according to established safety requirements and preferences of physician.Keeps patients safe from adverse events associated with surgery/procedure, including but not limited to: infection, burns, pressure ulcers, wrong site surgery, etc. Has knowledge of wound stage classifications. Observes patient during procedure to detect possible complications and/or breaks in sterile technique; furnishes emergency equipment and supplies to prevent adverse outcomes. Preserves and labels operative specimens for analysis.Participates in activities that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance.? Participates in professional development and life long learning. May participate in orientation and preceptorship of new staff, as needed.
