Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the region's leading academic medical center in Missouri, is seeking an OR nurse with 2-5 years of perioperative experience to join our Perioperative Services. You will scrub or circulate across multiple pods, collaborate with renowned surgeons and anesthesiologists, and contribute to patient safety and excellent outcomes.

Ideal candidates hold a Nursing Diploma/Associate's, RN license, and CNOR is preferred.

Qualifications

• RN license is required; CNOR and perioperative certifications preferred.
• 2-5 years of perioperative nursing experience.
• Bachelor's degree preferred for some roles.

Responsibilities

• Educates patients and their families about the communication process during the procedure and what to expect.
• Serves as liaison between physician, patient and family.
• Demonstrates competence in scrubbing and/or circulating for all perioperative services.
• Uses established safety techniques in preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures; sets up instruments and supplies.
• Keeps patients safe from adverse events during surgery and maintains sterile technique; labels operative specimens.
• Participates in safety, quality and regulatory compliance; may participate in orientation and preceptorship.

The Operating Room at BJH is separated into five Pods that each align with different surgical specialties:

• Pod 1: Pelvic specialties: gynecology, urology, colorectal, and general surgery
• Pod 2: Trauma, trauma services (wound treatment), reconstructive surgery for ortho (hip/knee replacement, orthoscopic knee and shoulder) and plastics repair
• Pod 3: Cardiac, transplant, vascular, heart/lung transfers
• Pod 4: Ophthalmology, Ortho, ENT, MIS, Plastics, and General Oncology
• Pod 5: Ortho, Spine, Neuro, ENT, kidney/liver tranplants

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within guidelines for standards of nursing care to inpatients and outpatients in the perioperative environment established by AORN.

Responsibilities

• Educates patients and their families about the communication process during the procedure, what to expect, and any support resources, as appropriate. Serves as liaison between physician and the patient and family.
• Demonstrates competence and independent practice in roles of scrubbing and/or circulating for all HSO-defined surgical services.
• Uses established safety techniques in preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures; provides and sets up necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for different types of surgeries or procedures according to established safety requirements and preferences of physician.
• Keeps patients safe from adverse events associated with surgery/procedure, including but not limited to: infection, burns, pressure ulcers, wrong site surgery, etc. Has knowledge of wound stage classifications. Observes patient during procedure to detect possible complications and/or breaks in sterile technique; furnishes emergency equipment and supplies to prevent adverse outcomes. Preserves and labels operative specimens for analysis.
• Participates in activities that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance.? Participates in professional development and life long learning. May participate in orientation and preceptorship of new staff, as needed.
