Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education / Experience: RN with two years of preferred clinical operating room, ICU, Cath Lab, or other procedural areas RN experience. Must possess and maintain a current license or valid permit to practice in Texas. Current BLS required.

Job Summary:

The competent clinician possesses the knowledge and skills to meet standards for professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. They are experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled in their specialty area, functioning as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Nurses transferring into the operating room must complete the OR-specific Competency Based Orientation (CBO) satisfactorily within the 6-month probationary period. Practice involves critical thinking, problem-solving, and patient-centered care, providing safe intraoperative patient care, and actively acquiring knowledge specific to surgical patients. They play a strong patient advocacy role, verifying surgical documents and safety checks, and collaborating with the surgical team during procedures. They enforce aseptic techniques, operate specialized OR equipment, and manage emergency situations in their specialty. They serve as a resource for less experienced nurses and provide patient care based on established standards and practice domains.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Validate specialized perioperative nursing knowledge.
  2. Ensure current perioperative practice standards are met.
  3. Coordinate with healthcare team members for patient care planning and evaluation.
  4. Participate in surgical time outs and debriefings.
  5. Ensure correct patient and procedure are performed.
  6. Monitor all surgical equipment.
  7. Assist in patient positioning and safety.
  8. Handle and document surgical specimens accurately.
  9. Support surgical technologists.
  10. Perform surgical counts and reconcile discrepancies.
  11. Document all surgical procedures and related information accurately.
  12. Support departmental initiatives for safety, efficiency, and satisfaction.
  13. Enforce aseptic techniques.
  14. Respond to emergencies and maintain professionalism under stress.
  15. Engage in staff morale and satisfaction efforts.
  16. Complete competency orientation tools timely.
  17. Assess patients independently and plan culturally and age-appropriate care.
  18. Deliver appropriate nursing care and perform point-of-care testing.
  19. Maintain a safe environment and infection control measures.
  20. Advocate for patients and develop care plans.
  21. Utilize research and quality improvement practices.
  22. Document comprehensively and accurately.
  23. Implement patient and family teaching effectively.
  24. Identify learning needs and set goals for self and others.
  25. Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and teamwork.
  26. Meet competency and performance evaluation requirements.
  27. Comply with health, safety, and internal control policies.
