Job summary

Baystate Health is seeking a Perioperative Orderly to support the surgical team in the Perioperative and Heart & Vascular Services. The role involves turnover, equipment cleaning, supply stocking, patient transport and positioning, and other duties under RN supervision.

Preferred candidates have 3–6 months of related experience, strong communication, and the ability to follow instructions in a fast-paced surgical setting. Excellent benefits and advancement opportunities are offered.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with operating room turnover and setup to support department throughput
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and aseptic environment per infection control standards
  • Perform daily inspection and cleaning of equipment in assigned areas
  • Prepare operating rooms according to scheduled procedures
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to leadership
  • Follow body substance precautions and wear PPE
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Assist with patient transport to PACU and other nursing units
  • Assist with patient positioning in operating rooms
  • Support Heart & Vascular team with pre-operative clipping and prepping
  • Stock and maintain supply PAR levels; communicate daily
  • Restock and monitor blanket warmers
  • Answer phones and assist nursing staff
  • Participate in orientation and annual competencies

Schedule: Full Time Day shift – 36 hours (7am-7:30pm) Rotating Weekends and holidays required

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Perioperative Orderly supports direct and indirect patient care activities within Perioperative and Heart & Vascular Services. This role works closely with the entire surgical team—including nurses, physicians, surgeons, technicians, and other hospital staff—to ensure efficient workflow, patient safety, and a clean, well-stocked surgical environment.

Responsibilities include assisting with operating room turnover, equipment cleaning and inspection, supply stocking, patient transport and positioning, and other support duties as assigned. The Orderly is also authorized to retrieve blood products from Transfusion Medicine Services as directed by a Registered Nurse or Coordinator. This position has no supervisory responsibilities and reports directly to the Manager or a designated member of the Perioperative leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with operating room turnover and setup to support department throughput
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and aseptic environment in compliance with infection control standards
  • Perform daily inspection and cleaning of equipment in assigned areas
  • Prepare operating rooms according to scheduled procedures
  • Remove, label, and report malfunctioning equipment to leadership
  • Follow all body substance precautions and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Assist with patient transport to PACU and other nursing units as needed
  • Assist with patient positioning in operating rooms
  • Support Heart & Vascular team members with pre-operative patient clipping and prepping
  • Stock and maintain supply PAR levels; communicate supply needs daily
  • Restock and monitor blanket warmers throughout the day
  • Answer phones and assist nursing staff as needed
  • Participate in required education, orientation, and annual competencies

No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
