Job summary

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated is seeking an Operating Engineer for Critical Environments to maintain 100% uptime of data center facility systems. You will operate and troubleshoot electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and controls equipment, monitor alarms, and ensure safe, compliant operations.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, CMMS work order management, and coordinating with vendors. Night shift schedule requires on-call availability and holiday coverage, with a 4-day work week.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of related work experience with building systems including emergency generators and switchgears.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations/codes.
  • Ability to write routine reports and address audiences clearly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access.
  • Ability to interact professionally with tenants and contractors.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders up to 30 ft, and navigating rooftops.
  • Willing to work a night shift schedule and on-call/holiday rotations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and perform preventive maintenance on data center systems including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC/CRAH, plumbing, and electrical equipment.
  • Monitor refrigeration, boilers, ventilation, pumps, piping and filters for optimal performance.
  • Record equipment readings and adjust systems to prevent downtime.
  • Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms and alerts promptly.
  • Analyze system operations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage work orders in CMMS, coordinate with vendors, and handle customer-facing tickets.
  • Follow emergency escalation procedures to control incidents that affect critical systems.
  • Maintain compliance with safety policies for storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials; keep the workplace clean and safe.
  • Respond to site emergencies and participate in on-call rotation.

**Job Title:** Operating Engineer - Critical Environments**What this job involves:** The Operating Engineer - Critical Environments is responsible for maintaining 100% uptime of all facility systems in a mission-critical data center environment. This role requires technical expertise in at least one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations) along with multi-skilled capabilities across other systems. You'll work a night shift schedule on a 4-day work week, operating and maintaining complex building systems while monitoring, troubleshooting, and responding to alarms to ensure continuous operation of critical infrastructure.**Night shift - 4 Day work week**Wednesday 11p-7aThursday 9p -7aFriday 9p-7aSaturday 7p-7a**Your day-to-day tasks will include:**• Operating and performing preventive maintenance on all data center systems including fire/life safety, mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, CRAC, CRAH, plumbing, controls), and electrical equipment (lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, switchgear, transformers)• Monitoring and adjusting refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating systems, water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, and filters to ensure optimal performance• Recording equipment readings and making necessary adjustments to maintain proper operation and prevent downtime• Monitoring building management systems and responding promptly to alarms and alerts to address issues before they impact operations• Analyzing system operations to determine root causes of problems or malfunctions and implementing corrective actions• Managing work orders through CMMS, coordinating with vendors, and handling customer-facing tickets• Understanding and following emergency escalation procedures to manage incidents that put critical systems at risk• Maintaining compliance with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials while keeping the workplace clean and safe• Responding to site emergencies and managing on-call rotation responsibilities**Desired experience and technical skills:****Requirements:**• High School diploma or GED equivalent• 4+ years of related work experience with systems, emergency generators, and switchgears• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations/codes• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before small groups• Working knowledge or capability to develop proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and other software packages• Ability to professionally interact with tenants and contractors• Capability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs, climb ladders up to 30 ft, and navigate rooftops• Ability to work a night shift schedule (Wednesday 11p-7a, Thursday 9p-7a, Friday 9p-7a, Saturday 7p-7a)• Flexibility to work holidays, on-call rotation, and respond to site emergencies**Preferred:**• CMMS work order system experience• Hands-on experience working in a data center or critical facility environmentThis position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.**Estimated compensation for this position:**75,000.00 – 85,000.00 USD per year*This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ.
