Overview

The New Hope Historical Society is seeking an Operating Director. This role serves as the chief administrative and operational officer, responsible for the overall success of the organization. This role requires a unique blend of leadership, business acumen, and a passion for history.



Responsibilities


  • Strategic Planning: In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop and implement a strategic plan that guides the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Board Relations: Reports to the Board of Directors, requiring frequent communication and interaction with the President and Executive Committee. Attend and prepare for all board meetings, including the technology for such meetings.

  • Operational Management: Oversee all day-to-day operations, including personnel, programs, buildings, and grounds. The Society’s headquarters are in our house museum, Parry Mansion, ca.1784. Appreciation and awareness of maintenance needs is vital.

  • Staff and Volunteer Management: Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment. Manage docents and seek additional volunteers when needed.



Financial Management and Fundraising


  • Financial Oversight: Develop and manage the annual budget, working with the Board Treasurer. Ensure the organization's financial health through sound business practices. Collaborate with the bookkeeper in the management of QuickBooks. Collaborate with the Treasurer on any taxation issues and filings.

  • Fundraising and Development: Serve as the chief development officer, leading fundraising efforts, including grant writing, major donor cultivation, annual appeals, and membership events and programs.

  • Revenue Generation: Identify and implement new revenue streams through events, programs, earned income, and sponsorships.



Programs, Collections, and Exhibitions


  • Program Development: Oversee the creation and implementation of educational programs, public events, and community outreach initiatives.

  • Collections Stewardship: With the Historic Preservation Chair (Collections & Archives) ensure the proper care, preservation, and accessibility of the collections, archives, and historic properties.

  • Exhibition Curation: Collaborate with the Historic Preservation Chair, staff and volunteers, on the curation of exhibits.



Public Relations and Community Engagement


  • Spokesperson and Ambassador: Function as the primary spokesperson for the historical society, building and maintaining relationships with community leaders, cultural institutions, businesses, and the media.

  • Marketing and Communications: Working with the Society’s outside Marketing Consultant, develop and execute a comprehensive marketing plan to raise the organization’s profile including the promotion and maintenance of our social media presence and events.

  • Partnerships: Collaborate and develop mutually beneficial partnerships with other community organizations, schools, and cultural institutions to expand the society’s reach and impact.



Qualifications


  • Experience: Demonstrated leadership and administrative experience in a mid-to-senior position within a non-profit or historical organization. Proven track record of successful fundraising, financial management, and strategic planning.

  • Skills: Exceptional communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and public speaking skills. Strong business acumen and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, including staff, volunteers, board members, and the public. Able to serve as a leader and individual contributor. Skilled in social media platforms, CRM systems, financial management systems and a willingness to adapt to new applications and technologies.

Compensation, Vacation & Location

The salary is $60,000 - $65,000. We offer fourteen paid vacation days per year, and all vacation days must require advance approval of the Board President. We offer three paid sick/personal days per calendar year. This is a full-time position and is exempt from overtime work. 40 hours per week is expected and more may require more when events are scheduled. Occasional remote work is acceptable, but the expectation is that most work will be conducted at the Parry Mansion.
