The Department of Statistical Science at Duke University invites applications for an open rank faculty position as Professor of the Practice, beginning in Fall 2019. This is a regular rank faculty position with a renewable appointment. Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating outstanding teaching and strong interests in data science education, as well as developing and expanding our undergraduate major in Statistical Science and interdisciplinary major in Data Science.
The Department is an internationally recognized center of excellence in research and education in contemporary statistical methodologies. It has strengths in Bayesian analysis, interdisciplinary applications, and computationally intensive methods. The Department offers excellent teaching support, computational facilities, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Currently, there are 23 regular faculty members, 18 visiting, adjunct, and postdoctoral faculty, and over 100 graduate students and 90 undergraduate majors in statistical science.
The educational programs and research agenda benefit from strong connections with other groups at Duke, the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) located nearby in the Research Triangle, and other collaborators nationwide. Responsibilities include teaching three courses per year (including undergraduate and potential graduate courses), supervising undergraduate theses and projects, and supporting the growth of the statistical science major. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, data science, or a related field, be actively engaged in research, and be interested in curriculum development and teaching statistics at all levels.
