Job description

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral or Associate Research Scientist position in computational mineral physics. The position is associated with the project entitled Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Successful candidates should be experienced computational materials physicists/scientists with advanced skills in scientific computing.

The primary goal of this project is to develop a mineral properties database for geophysical modeling, particularly for the interpretation of seismic tomography models and their geodynamics investigation. Research activities will involve regular communication and collaboration with seismologist and geodynamicists on related aspects of the overall project and with a group of international contributors for database development.

The successful candidate should have advanced skills in Computer Science to a) advance software high-throughput methods for materials simulations, b) implement scientific workflows in ACCESS for mass production of ab initio results, and c) database development. The ability to think and work across disciplinary boundaries is a plus.

The position is funded initially for one year, with possible extension up to three and a half years. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.

Candidates for the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scientist should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in computational materials/mineral physics or materials science. Starting salary is $71,050.

Candidates for the rank of Associate Reserach Scientist must have a PhD in computational materials/mineral physics or materials science and at least (2) years of relevant post-PhD experience. Salary range: $80,000-$90,000.

Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.

The Lamont campus values diversity and inclusion, and encourages applications from members of underrepresented minority groups.
