Job description

This position provides clinical expertise in assessment and management of patients with primary or metastatic nervous system cancers, neurological complications of cancer, and treatment-related neurotoxicities. Will participate in providing clinical services and be on call on a rotating schedule. Participates in academic activities including clinical research related to nervous system neoplasms, treatment complications, and quality of life. Participates in supervising and teaching neuro-oncology fellows, neurology residents, and medical students in neurology/neuro-oncology. Fellowship training in neuro-oncology is required; expertise and experience in other academic subspecialties of neuro-oncology are desired but not required. The candidate should be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and meet criteria for full medical licensure in the state of Texas.

1. Clinical:

Is a self‑motivated, committed, and conscientious professional who can provide neuro‑oncology expertise for the assessment and management of patients with primary brain tumors and other nervous system neoplasms, including the prescription and management of chemotherapy, targeted therapies, biologic therapies, and other systemic anti‑neoplastic treatments. Provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care to patients with neurological complications of cancer or cancer‑related therapy. Provide care in outpatient and inpatient settings and participate in the inpatient cancer neurology consultation service and call schedule.

Develop and maintain a neuro‑oncology practice for patients referred to UT MD Anderson. Provide physician staffing for the outpatient clinic, inpatient neuro‑oncology service, and the inpatient consultative neurology service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other clinical neurologists/neuro‑oncologists with the same level of training and experience. Visually review for proper ICD‑10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents. Complete patient documentation for medical records within time‑frames provided by the institution. This role requires clear, concise documentation or dictation and visual review of documents. Correspond, as appropriate, in writing or by telephone conversations with referring physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Keep abreast of current approaches to patient management by attending continuing education conferences in the specialty, including listening to and assimilating information from the conference. Obtain appropriate consultations for neurology/neuro‑oncology patients by phone conversations or in writing with other specialist physicians.

2. Administrative:

Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Review all documents related to committee functions. Provide peer review to assess faculty clinical practice of faculty within the department. Participate in department meetings as required for operational and academic activities.

3. Research:

Engage in clinical research and scholarly activity in keeping with the goals of the department. Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department. Assist in developing programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the department. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation and conduct. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer and keyboard. May require participating in budget development and analysis as needed for research activities.

4. Education:

Provide a balanced and integrated educational experience in neurology for residents, medical students, and fellows, and the management of cancer in the central nervous system for those who rotate through the clinical consultative/neurology service or outpatient service. Help develop, implement, provide, and evaluate the written learning materials for the neuro‑oncology curriculum in neuro‑oncology. Help develop and implement specific continuing education programs about neuro‑oncology. Attend and participate in department/division teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the hospital and campus.

5. Service:

Participate in institutional committees and extramural activities including national societies, external lectures and academic committees as relevant. Represent the Department of Neuro‑Oncology and the institution in local, regional, state, and national matters related to neuro‑oncology and the effects of cancer on the central nervous system. May require travel to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminate information obtained or learned by sharing it with department colleagues verbally or in writing.

6. Practice in an exemplary manner in accordance with standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.

7. Strive to be a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, students, APNs & PAs rotating on the service.

8. Must be able to work within a context of close interpersonal relationships, including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.
