Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking an Oncology Nurse Navigator to coordinate care across the cancer continuum, from diagnosis through survivorship. The ONN will act as a clinician, educator, and case manager to enhance quality, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.

Job Requirements

Reporting to the Director of Oncology Integrated Health, the Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) acts as a clinician, case manager, and educator to optimize clinical quality and patient outcomes. The ONN coordinates care across the entire continuum—from diagnosis through chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, survivorship, and palliative care. Functioning as a key multidisciplinary liaison and community representative, the ONN models advanced nursing practice while driving strategies to improve patient satisfaction, quality of care, and cost-effectiveness.

Work Experience
Education & Training

License: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland (required).

Certifications: Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) highly preferred.

Core Expertise: Deep knowledge of nursing theory, oncology practice, adult learning principles, instructional design, and case management.

Work Orientation & Experience

Oncology Experience: minimum of 3 years of specialized oncology nursing experience.

Case Management & Education: Proven track record in clinical case management and designing, executing, and evaluating effective patient and staff educational programs.

Skills & Competencies

Clinical Excellence: Proficient with patient intake, triage, holistic assessment, and real-time care plan management and adaptation.

Care Coordination: Skilled in navigating multidisciplinary care teams, facilitating community resources, and tracking outcomes across the continuum of care.

Leadership & Initiative: Strong self-starter capable of managing competing priorities, driving independent initiatives, and maintaining precise attention to detail.

Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; adept at building relationships across clinical teams, leadership, external partners, and diverse patient populations.

Problem-Solving & Tech Savvy: Exceptional decision-making, crisis management, and organization skills. Tech-proficient in electronic data management and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access). Experience with Epic a plus.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to (a) monitor, assess and record patient progress against a plan of care, (b) adjust the plan of care based on assessed changes in patient status, (c) handle multiple priorities, (d) work independently and take initiative in achieving expected results. Demonstrate skills in: (e) planning, implementing and evaluating patient services (f) facilitating patient access to community resources (g) tracking and coordinating patient activities in relation to the plan of care (h) making effective decisions, (i) problem-solving, (j) crisis management (k) verbal and written patient and staff educational presentations, (l) organizing work, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, (m) attention to detail and follow through, , (n) working with physicians and multiple-specialty team members to coordinate educational events, (o) ability to work successfully with diverse types of individuals including, management staff, external organizations and the general public, and (p) is computer literate with proficiency in word processing, Excel, Access and data management skills.
