Job summary

The Medical Lab Assistant role at UVA Health’s Cancer Care Laboratory network blends hands-on patient interaction with laboratory operations in ambulatory cancer care clinics. You will work with laboratory staff, oncology providers, and care teams to ensure timely, accurate, and compassionate care for oncology patients.

You will receive, prepare, and manage patient specimens, assist with workflow, perform phlebotomy as needed, and collaborate with clinicians to support seamless patient care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; MLA CSC or MLA coursework completed.
• Must meet CLIA education requirements for complexity of testing.
• MLA(ASCP) certification within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Receive, prepare, and manage patient specimens for testing.
• Coordinate specimen routing and transport workflows.
• Assist laboratory staff with workflow management and operational support.
• Perform phlebotomy and patient-facing laboratory activities as needed.
• Collaborate with oncology clinicians and care teams to support patient care.
• Contribute to quality initiatives, safety protocols, and service excellence.
• Maintain an organized, efficient, patient-focused laboratory environment.
• Adapt to changing priorities and support coverage across locations.
