Overview

The Oncology Financial Coordinator supports patients within an Article 28 Infusion Unit by serving as the primary point of contact for patient-centered financial questions and concerns. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of billing procedures, insurance processes, and financial assistance programs. The Coordinator proactively communicates with patients—both in person and by phone—to explain CHS billing practices, payment requirements, and insurance processing.

This position plays a critical role in identifying financial barriers to care and collaborating with Finance, pharmacies, drug manufacturers, and nonprofit organizations to secure financial assistance, grants, and other funding resources, ensuring patients receive timely and high-quality oncology treatment.

Job Details
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Inform patients of financial responsibilities, coverage options, and required actions
  • Screen patients for current or future financial assistance opportunities
  • Establish and maintain trusting relationships with patients and families
  • Educate patients on insurance coverage and financial assistance programs
  • Provide information regarding hospital billing and administrative procedures
  • Respond to patient inquiries and conduct thorough account analyses
  • Assist patients in understanding financial implications of recommended exams and treatments
  • Partner with pharmaceutical companies and nonprofit organizations to secure grants and charity funding for high-cost oncology medications
  • Serve as liaison between Financial Counseling and patients for in-person consultations regarding treatment costs and out-of-pocket expenses
  • Coordinate with pharmacies to clarify prescriptions and ensure timely medication access
  • Submit and track claims to assistance programs; post payments to patient accounts upon receipt
  • Monitor foundation enrollments and manage re-enrollment as needed
  • Track patient assistance activity for Cancer Committee reporting
  • Assist Administrative Director and Practice Manager with Cancer Institute projects and strategic initiatives
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and required organizational meetings
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D guidelines and policies
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
Education And Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Care, Population Health, or related field preferred, or
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare or community-based organization preferred
  • Experience with Epic, insurance processing, reporting, and medical coding required
