Job Description

GENERAL OVERVIEW: This position performs data abstraction by capturing complete patient history, diagnosis, staging, and treatment information for all patients accessioned into the AHN cancer registry database, in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC), the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry, and AHN requirements. The specialist assumes responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information collected.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Perform primary data abstraction duties for clinical measures and registries, ensuring high accuracy and alignment with organizational quality standards. (65%)
  2. Screen disease indices, pathology reports, radiology reports, and other clinical documents to identify reportable cancer cases. (15%)
  3. Maintain the cancer registry database, including loading import files, generating data status reports, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and reporting to state registries as needed. (10%)
  4. Participate in annual educational opportunities to stay informed of updates and changes. (10%)
  5. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in a healthcare-related field or relevant experience/education as determined by the company.
  • One year of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and/or medical terminology.
  • One year of experience interpreting medical and treatment information.
  • Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Epic software
  • Experience with Elekta Metriq software
  • Registered Health Information Technician/Administrator (RHIT/RHIA) or eligible for exam

Skills:

  • Ability to understand and interpret medical and treatment information.
