Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is a mission-driven nonprofit that provides lifesaving care to the animals who need it most, caring for approximately 300 animals a day across our sanctuary and foster network while supporting rescue partners throughout the Kansas City region. Our medical work extends beyond our own animals through two signature initiatives the On-Site Veterinarian will help deliver:
The VRC is an invitation-only, mission-aligned partnership that gives smaller rescues guaranteed, affordable access to the same high-quality surgical and medical care our own animals receive — so no animal waits weeks for a surgery it needs now. Partners reserve monthly veterinary capacity through flat retainers rather than per-procedure pricing, with medications and labs billed at direct cost and no profit motive. Delivered through Always & Furever (Missouri) and St. Francis Outreach, LLC (Kansas), the VRC handles the cases that leave most rescues stranded on emergency-clinic waitlists: pyometra spays, mass and tumor removals, foreign-body surgeries, amputations, complex dentals, and high-volume spay/neuter days.
Community Care is a neighbor-helping-neighbor fund that helps families keep the pets they love when a veterinary bill is more than they can manage. Funded entirely by donors and local business sponsors — never by taxpayer dollars — residents apply, a fair monthly drawing selects recipients, and care is delivered by our own veterinary team through the mobile clinic, partner clinic days, and our facilities. First launched as the Osawatomie Community Care Fund (OCC), the program is expanding across the communities we serve. Community Care delivers the full standard of veterinary medicine — proper anesthesia, monitoring, diagnostics, and follow-up — covering wellness exams, vaccines, spay/neuter, dental, and common medical concerns.
Where you fit in
The On-Site Veterinarian is central to both program: providing the surgical and medical care that makes VRC partnerships possible and Community Care appointments a reality, all while maintaining the highest standard of care for the sanctuary’s own population of dogs and cats.
The Always & Furever On-Site Lead Veterinarian will deliver high-quality medical care to all shelter animals — including, but not limited to, spay/neuter and the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions — and will extend that same standard of care to the animals and families served through the Veterinary Rescue Collaboration and Community Care programs across our Osawatomie and Spring Hill, Kansas locations and our 2027 Kansas City, Missouri campus.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Work is performed in a mobile veterinary clinic with shared office space, across the Osawatomie, KS and Spring Hill, KS locations and the Kansas City, MO campus (opening December 2026). There is potential for exposure to diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects. Field conditions may be encountered. The role involves occasional lifting of up to or over 50 pounds, the potential for standing on feet for 8+ hours a day (40-hour work week), and animal handling in a veterinary setting.
We believe in treating our people as well as we treat our animals. We invest in people first and programs always — and we back that up with meaningful pay and benefits.
Always & Furever leads with a servant-leadership mindset: we support, coach, and empower our people so they can do the best work of their careers. This is a role with genuine room to grow. As our programs expand, so does our medical team:
People first, programs always
At Always & Furever, we value and love every animal as a soul, never as inventory or income. That same belief shapes how we treat our team: with kindness, dignity, and respect. We are #NotYourAverageShelter, and we are not your average workplace.
Our dream is
To wake up in a world where every soul is treated with kindness, dignity, and respect and most importantly, their life has been touched by love, even if only for a moment. Because at Always & Furever, every life matters.
We rescue the animals no one else will take — the seniors, the sick, the forgotten, and those on the brink of euthanasia. We never shy away from a complex or expensive medical case, because we have seen miracles happen again and again. One of our mottos is that you cannot put a price on any animal’s life — they are all priceless to us. We do not charge adoption fees, and we run on the generosity of a community of animal lovers who believe, as we do, that every soul deserves love.
Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is an equal-opportunity employer committed to a compassionate, mission-driven workplace.
