Job summary

Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is seeking a Veterinary Technician/Assistant to join our mobile clinic team and Kansas City campus. Located in Osawatomie, KS; Spring Hill, KS; and MO, this role provides skilled medical support, assists veterinarians, and helps with patient care across our sanctuary and foster network.

Veterinary Technician/Assistant

Organization: Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary

Reports to: Medical Director (works closely with executive leadership)

Locations: Osawatomie, KS (mobile clinic) · Spring Hill, KS (mobile clinic) · Kansas City, MO (new brick-and-mortar campus, opening December 2026)

Schedule: Full-time (exempt), 40 hours/week; may include after-hours medical communication from staff. Part-time will be considered with the right applicant.

Licensure: RVT license not required

About Always & Furever

Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is a mission-driven nonprofit that provides lifesaving care to the animals who need it most, caring for approximately 300 animals a day across our sanctuary and foster network while supporting rescue partners throughout the Kansas City region. Our medical work extends beyond our own animals through two signature initiatives:

  • The Veterinary Rescue Collaboration: providing high-quality medical care to smaller rescues and shelters that partner with A&F
  • Community Care: Funded entirely by donors and local business sponsors, community members in need of assistance apply, recipients are selected through a monthly drawing, and care is delivered by our own veterinary team
Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Veterinary Nursing & Patient Care
  • Provide skilled medical and surgical support for animal patients, including IV catheter placement, intubation, blood collection, vaccine administration, preventative care, and diagnostic testing such as urinalysis, ear cytology, and radiology.
  • Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and medical procedures while ensuring high standards of patient care.
  • Utilize low stress animal handling techniques.
  • Provide on-site protocol-based supportive care to shelter animals as needed with the help of another medical team staff member.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records, documenting treatments, diagnostics, observations, and follow-up care.
  • Assist with oversight of the medical aspects of foster and volunteer programs, ensuring continuity of care and adherence to treatment protocols.
Surgical & Anesthesia Support
  • Prepare patients for surgery through clipping, surgical scrubbing, administration of local anesthetic blocks, and pre-operative patient preparation.
  • Monitor anesthesia during surgical procedures and assist with patient recovery and post-operative care.
  • Maintain surgical readiness by processing, cleaning, packaging, and sterilizing instruments and equipment according to established aseptic standards.
Communication & Coordination
  • Communicate treatment plans, medical updates, and follow-up instructions to foster families, volunteers, and staff members.
  • Collaborate with veterinary and shelter teams to coordinate patient care, monitor ongoing medical cases, and support positive animal outcomes.
  • Serve as a medical resource for fosters, volunteers, and staff, providing guidance on treatment protocols, medication administration, and patient care needs.
  • Perform weekly medical inventory and communicate inventory needs with advance notice.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary technician role required.
  • Experience in a high volume or shelter setting preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong customer service and oral/written communication skills.
  • Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Able to deal with staff, volunteers, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Able to provide treatments including subcutaneous fluid administration, subcutaneous medication administration, and calculating medication doses without direct supervision from a veterinarian.
  • Able to safely restrain cats and dogs of various sizes.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a 26 ft mobile veterinary clinic with shared office space, across the Osawatomie, KS and Spring Hill, KS locations and the Kansas City, MO campus (opening December 2026). There is potential for exposure to diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects. Field conditions may be encountered. The role involves occasional lifting of up to or over 50 pounds, the potential for standing on feet for 8+ hours a day (40-hour work week), and animal handling in a veterinary setting. Technicians may be asked to drive the 26 ft mobile clinic (no CDL required).
