Job summary

Rutgers University in Newark is seeking a Lab Animal Care Technician for the Office for Research. The role involves diversified animal care, daily observation, and maintenance of animal facilities to ensure humane treatment and compliance with regulatory standards.

You will work with multiple species, maintain daily census data, and support research projects while following protocols and safety guidelines in a fully on-site environment.

Qualifications

• High school or equivalent education and willingness to work with various animal species.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass health evaluations.
• Passed Rutgers Defensive Driving Course or willingness to complete.
• Animal handling experience in a research setting is preferred.
• AALAS ALAT certification is desirable; two+ years as a Laboratory Animal Caretaker is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide diversified care, feeding, transport, and daily observation for all animal species used in research and teaching.
• Maintain facilities and ensure humane care and treatment of animals.
• Keep daily census records and report any illness or distress observed in animals.
• Work with project teams to meet protocol needs and maintain colony rooms.
• Report noncompliance and assist in euthanasia when instructed.
• Care for virus-free species with attention to welfare regulations and policies.
• Adhere to safety PPE requirements and perform duties in cage wash and animal rooms as needed.
