Responsibilities

  • Respond to call-ins to plow snow and de-ice road surfaces in assigned areas of the city.
  • Operate light and heavy equipment to remove snow and ice from streets, trails, sidewalks, parking lots, and other public areas.
  • Perform manual labor, including shoveling, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving materials and equipment.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and minor repairs of assigned equipment and promptly report mechanical or operational deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with other divisions and departments in the maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities and the delivery of public work services.

Job description

This seasonal Maintenance Worker position contributes to the Public Works Department's efforts to maintain safe, clean, and clear streets for the traveling public. Duties include snow and ice removal and the safe operation and upkeep of related City equipment.

This is an on‑call position with no fixed schedule. Work is assigned based on weather, operational, and staffing needs and requires a dependable, safety-conscious individual who can work independently and as part of a team. Hours will vary from week to week and may include weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights, and/or weekends.

2026 Pay Range:$23.48/hour - $30.93/hour

  • Respond to call‑ins to plow snow and de‑ice road surfaces in assigned areas of the city.
  • Operate light and heavy equipment to remove snow and ice from streets, trails, sidewalks, parking lots, and other public areas.
  • Perform manual labor, including shoveling, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving materials and equipment.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and minor repairs of assigned equipment and promptly report mechanical or operational deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures used in snow removal and street maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and hazards associated with snow and ice removal.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally exert force up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying Minnesota weather conditions, in both daylight and nighttime conditions.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years old by November 1, 2026.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
