  • Training & development

The On-Call Substitute provides classroom and program support as needed throughout the center, working with infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. Expectations and responsibilities are consistent with those of the Floater Aide; however, this is an on-call position with no guaranteed hours or regular schedule.

Substitutes may be contacted to provide coverage for staff call-outs, vacations, appointments, scheduled absences, or additional classroom support.

Schedule & Availability

This position is scheduled on an as-needed basis. No minimum or guaranteed number of hours is provided. Hours may vary significantly from week to week depending on program needs.

Substitutes are expected to:
  • Maintain reasonable communication regarding their current availability.
  • Respond promptly when contacted regarding available shifts.
  • Understand that accepting offered shifts is based on their availability.
  • Be flexible regarding classroom assignments and work with infants, toddlers, or preschoolers as needed.
  • Understand that shift length, start/end times, and frequency of work may vary.
Primary Responsibilities

The On-Call Substitute is expected to:

  • Assist Teachers, Lead Teachers, and Administration with assigned tasks.
  • Provide attentive, safe, and developmentally appropriate care to children.
  • Follow classroom routines, teacher directions, program policies, and established expectations.
  • Maintain active supervision of children at all times.
  • Work independently on routine classroom responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate patience, consistency, and understanding with all children.
  • Build positive and appropriate relationships with children.
  • Assist with diapering, toileting, potty training, meals, bottles, naps, and other caregiving routines.
  • Hold, rock, comfort, and care for infants as needed.
  • Participate in classroom play, learning activities, outdoor time, and daily routines.
  • Assist teachers with planned lessons, activities, art projects, and classroom transitions.
  • Complete classroom and bathroom cleaning, sanitizing, and organization tasks.
  • Move between classrooms or assignments as directed.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with staff and Administration.
  • Complete other reasonable duties as assigned based on program needs.
Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and moving between sitting and standing. Substitutes must be physically capable of caring for young children, including holding and rocking infants, assisting with diapering and toileting, participating in floor play, supervising outdoor activities, and completing routine cleaning and sanitizing.

Position Expectations

Substitutes are expected to provide the same quality of care, professionalism, supervision, and classroom support as regularly scheduled staff while they are working.

Because substitutes may work in different classrooms and with different staff members from shift to shift, they must be adaptable, able to follow directions, and willing to learn and follow the routines and expectations of each classroom.

The primary focus of this position should always remain on the safety, supervision, care, development, and well-being of the children and supporting the teachers responsible for their classrooms.

Employment in this position does not guarantee any specific number of hours, shifts, or frequency of work.
