Position Summary:

Marketplace is hiring a relentless forward-thinking news person with excellent news judgment, creative and strategic thinker who knows how to quickly position our newsroom to get ahead of fast moving economic stories, as well as anticipate and plan for short and long term coverage that moves with the natural business news cycle. This person should be results-oriented and driven by timelines. Understanding planning tools is preferred since our reporting teams are spread out across the world and will be required to participate in the planning process. This role will work collaboratively and cross-functionally with editors, reporters and other staff members across the organization. This role will be responsible for regular communication to news staff. Editing will also be part of this role. This position is part of the Marketplace news leadership team and will be a crucial addition to our organization, supporting Marketplace in serving new and existing audiences where they are.

Expected Compensation Range: $45.57 - $54.68/ hourly. Exact rate determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creates planning process for Marketplace that includes broadcast and digital platforms
  • Creates a process for regular communication about all story plans both short term and longer term
  • Organizes and leads planning meetings, highlighting topical events coming in the news cycle with strong ideas about the Marketplace’s slice of those stories
  • Ability to work with reporters, editors and producers to work through story ideas and plans
  • Collaborate with digital news to maximize show content across all platforms
  • Audio editing
  • Ensures all material meets Marketplace content meets standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or related field required.
  • Four or more years of experience editing, reporting or producing.
  • National experience strongly preferred.
  • Able to function independently and within a strong team environment
  • Well-established editing skills; and an understanding of the need for interpretive reporting on often complex and many-layered issues
  • Superior abilities in creating story ideas, writing, editing, and producing and reporting programs and program elements
  • Sound critical judgment skills and the ability to make decisions regarding credibility, personality and value of material to the program
  • Able to create relationships with internal and external reporters and freelancers
  • Ability to manage multiple things at the same time
  • Must be able to adapt writing and reporting to reflect the sensibility and style of the program
  • Knowledge of digital audio editing equipment use
  • Critical reading and listening skills
  • Understanding of and adherence to the core values of public radio

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • National experience strongly preferred
  • Well-established contacts and knowledge of the journalism community
  • Background in business, finance and the economy is helpful
  • Understanding and empathy of societal issues that revolve around money
  • Ability to operate remote and on-site recording equipment, editing audio, and prepare all elements of program in ready-for-broadcast form.
