Job description

Skidmore College Dining Services is accepting applications for the On Call Customer Attendant Short Order Cook.

SUMMARY

Prepare, cook, serve, and clean work and dining areas, along with other duties as described below or as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with setup, serving, and cleaning of any station as assigned.
  • Heat items for daily specials, which may be prepared by a cook or be convenience-type items such as soups, chili, casseroles, etc., using ovens, steamers, charbroilers, griddles, pasta makers, or fryers as appropriate.
  • Merchandise and ensure correct signage for assigned station.
  • Greet guests, check IDs, sell guest tickets as assigned, and complete sales on the POS system.
  • Stock items for sale or service.
  • Clean and fill beverage machines and stations, ensuring cups, glasses, and utensils are available at all times.
  • Maintain dining room cleanliness and appearance, including tables, chairs, and floor areas.
  • Sort silverware, fill dispensers, and maintain supply of clean dishes at service points; refill salt and pepper shakers and napkin dispensers.
  • If assigned to the dishroom, responsibilities may include scraping dishes, reusing containers and utensils, operating conveyor systems, and proper storage.
  • Date and label all food items stored.
  • Assist in food production and other areas within Dining Services as assigned.
  • Assist with special and catering events.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of buffets, closets, and central receiving areas.
  • Handle laundry washing, drying, and proper storage when assigned.
  • Sell alcoholic beverages in compliance with NYS Liquor Authority and college regulations.
  • Regularly check and record food temperatures throughout the day in accordance with policies and health codes.
  • Clean carts, bleach dishes, trays, glasses, burnish silver, and handle other special event items.
  • Test new recipes when requested.
  • Ensure all food is prepared, served, and stored in accordance with NYS Health Codes.
  • Confer with supervisors on additional duties related to food preparation and cleaning.
  • Maintain cleanliness of chairs, tables, and equipment weekly.
  • Demonstrate interest in learning new ideas.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with supervisors, customers, and colleagues.
  • Maintain appropriate professional appearance and dress.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; six months of relevant work experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Effective speaking and listening skills.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, and multiply in culinary weights and measurements; accurate money counting and making change.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions, solve problems involving concrete variables, and utilize basic computer functions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

ServSafe / HACCP certification within one year of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach, lift (up to 30 pounds), push, pull, climb, and balance. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Exposure to wet/humid conditions, extreme temperatures, moving parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise levels are moderate to loud. Proper chemical handling and safety procedures are required.

Additional Information

Reassignment, training, overtime, and weekend work may be required. Compliance with New York State Health Codes is mandatory. Attendance at training sessions is required.

Pay: $19.77/hour

Work Schedule: Night and weekends
