Job summary

Fairview Health Services is seeking a Chaplain to integrate spiritual and emotional care within the care team. You will assess spiritual needs, provide direct chaplaincy, mentor students in SHS, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team on ethical and relational dynamics in clinical settings.

Applicants should hold a theology graduate degree or equivalent, have CPE credentials, and meet APC/NACC/NAJC/CASC/ACSS eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Theology from approved theological seminary/university or completion of mentored religious tradition training.
  • Four ACPE-accredited CPE units.
  • 1 year experience as a chaplain.
  • Eligible for APC, NACC, NAJC or CASC/ACSS professional chaplain certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct spiritual care for patients and families based on assessed spiritual needs during clinical assignments and on-call shifts.
  • Advocate for patients and families.
  • Triage and manage crises in spiritual care.
  • Adapt care approaches to developmental level and cultural differences of the population served, including spiritual/religious considerations.
  • Exercise active listening, compassionate presence, and clear communication in one-on-one and group settings.
  • Provide or arrange sacraments/rituals/prayers per patient/family traditions.

Education

Graduate degree in Theology from approved theological seminary/university or completion of mentored religious tradition training
Four units of ACPE-accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
1 year experience as a chaplain
APC or NACC or NAJC or CASC/ACSS certification eligibility

Job description

Job Overview

The Chaplain incorporates the spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development into one's practice of care and reflects a working knowledge of different ethics theories appropriate to one's professional context. Additionally, the Chaplain is the spiritual care specialist of the care team responsible for assessing spiritual care needs and providing direct spiritual care and consultation to patients, and families. Within the Spiritual Health Services (SHS) department, the Chaplain serves as a mentor to students (e.g., Clinical Pastoral Education residents and interns), along with SHS volunteers, who are authorized to provide ministry on behalf of Fairview. The Chaplain works with other members of the interdisciplinary team to identify and respond to spiritual and emotional needs and is attune to notice the relational dynamics and ethical principles at play in the clinical and professional setting.

Responsibilities
  • Use one’s own professional authority as a spiritual care provider through direct spiritual care for patients and families based on assessment of spiritual needs in clinical assignment and during assigned on-call shifts.
  • Advocate for patients and families.
  • Triage and manage crises in the practice of spiritual care.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served, including spiritual/religious informed care or service.
  • Exercise skillful listening, compassionate presence & clear communication in one‑on‑one, small group, care conferences, and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide/arrange for provision of sacraments/rituals/prayers and integrative modalities at the request of patients and/or family members in a manner aligning with the traditions of the particular patient, family member, or significant other.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Theology from approved theological seminary/university, or completion of training in mentored religious tradition as defined by that religious tradition
  • Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited by Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
  • 1 year experience as a chaplain
  • Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or
  • National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or
  • Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) or
  • Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne de Soins Spirituel (CASC/ACSS)
