Job summary

The City of Parkland is seeking an On-Call Aftercare Assistant to supervise children at the recreation center on an as-needed basis. You will plan and oversee activities, ensure safety, and engage with parents and guardians in a professional manner.

Responsibilities include organizing games, transporting children as required, and maintaining safety standards. Prior experience as a Summer Camp Counselor with Parkland is preferred, and you must hold CPR/First Aid/AED certifications.

Qualifications

  • Must have valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Experience as a Summer Camp Counselor for at least one full Summer with the City of Parkland.

Job description

The On-Call Aftercare Assistant will work on an on-call, as needed basis. This position performs intermediate paraprofessional work planning and supervising the activities of children at a recreation center. Work is performed under general supervision.

  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of each child under their watch.
  • Supervises and organizes games and activities for children.
  • Escorts children using different forms of transportation (i.e., walking, bus).
  • Is aware of and implements safety guidelines.
  • Takes responsibility for the quality of the supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintains a high standard of health and safety in all activities for children and staff.
  • High level of professionalism when interacting with parents and guardians.
  • Supervises the orderly arrival and departure of children.
  • Represents the City positively when interacting with the public.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Must have valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Experience as a Summer Camp Counselor for at least one (1) full Summer with the City of Parkland.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to pass a Level 2 Background Check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical
  • Ability to commit to the entire Fall Break/Winter Break/Spring Break program
  • Ability to work up to 8 hours per day during the course of the program
  • Ability to communicate well with participants, parents, other staff and the general public
  • Ability to exercise initiative, interpret and apply laws, ordinance, rules, regulations, and safety and health standards
  • Ability to change planned activities in a moment's notice
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Ability to set a good example for campers to encourage sharing, clean up, and good sportsmanship
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to be patient and calm in a high stress environment
  • Ability to teach and coach campers in planned activities indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, self-control, and demonstrate enthusiasm
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work environment is typically performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity and responsiveness to changes that include goals, priorities, and needs of the organization and position.
  • The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in hot, humid, or rainy weather.
  • Must be able to constantly stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, talking, walking, and running.

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION: This position is deemed a safety sensitive position in accordance with Florida State Statute Chapter 112.0455 Drug Free Workplace Act and is subject to pre-employment drug screening.
