Offshore Rigger Job Description

Position: Offshore Rigger

Job Summary

The Offshore Rigger is responsible for accurate layout, cutting, assembly, and fitting of piping, vessel, and structural components. This role requires recent offshore construction experience, the ability to interpret blueprints and ISOs, and proficiency in physical fabrication tasks. The Fitter must uphold high standards of safety, accuracy, and productivity while maintaining a positive and professional work attitude.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Figure material take-offs on drawings for required cut lengths.
  2. Use pipe cutting machine, or if unavailable, use beveling machine to cut pipe to required length.
  3. Communicate with helper/rigger to identify needed material or equipment for each task.
  4. Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and heavy hammers.
  5. Mark reference points on floor or face block and transpose them to workpiece using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone.
  6. Direct welders to build up low spots or short pieces with weld.
  7. Straighten warped or bent parts using sledge, hand torch, straightening press, and push-pull methods.
  8. Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torch.
  9. Examine blueprints and plan work sequence, applying knowledge of geometry, weld shrinkage, machining, and metal thickness.
  10. Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment using welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints.
  11. Label all information on pipe before cutting; transfer item numbers onto cut sheet and carry over to drop pipe.
  12. Inspect and test installed systems and pipelines using pressure gauges, hydrostatic testing, or other approved methods.
  13. Ascend/descend stairwells frequently with or without tools and equipment.
  14. Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair per specifications.
  15. Read and understand blueprints and ISOs.
  16. Demolish and install handrails and grating on platform.
  17. Verify all measurements, checking for square and level before releasing to welder.
  18. Note pre-weld dimensions on fitter drawings.
  19. Hang and swing on vertical ropes to/from platform and boat (potential rough seas/wind).
  20. Ensure all fabricated items are tagged with the correct job number, customer name, and piece number.
  21. Climb and work from heights.
  22. Pull tools and equipment up/down to workstations or areas.
  23. Show up to work on time and as scheduled.
  24. Inspect all equipment daily (torch, torch hoses, grinder, levels, tapes, etc.).
  25. Maintain a clean and safe work area by sweeping as needed.
  26. Complete and discuss a thorough Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA) prior to each task.
  27. Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent ACI professionally.
What You Need to Know
  • Preferably 2 years minimum experience in fitting (piping, vessel, and structural) fabrication.
  • Minimum of 2 years recent offshore construction experience.
  • Most recent offshore experience within the last 4 years.
  • Ability to read and interpret ISOs and blueprints.
  • Familiarity with offshore emergency response, escape procedures, and water survival skills.
