Job summary

AIS is seeking vessel strike avoidance protected species observers (VSA) for deployment on vessels off the coast of New York during summer/fall 2026. The role involves monitoring marine mammals and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements during 24-hour operations.

Candidates must have a 4-year degree in biological or geophysical sciences, relevant safety training, and the ability to work long shifts. The position offers competitive hourly pay and eligibility for benefits after 30 days of employment.

Qualifications

• Must have current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) or equivalent.
• Must be able to lift objects up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

• Monitor for visual detections of marine mammals for up to 12 hours.
• Advise crew on regulatory requirements.
• Collect and enter data into required data sheet.
