Job summary

The City of Pasadena, TX is seeking a front desk assistant for the animal shelter to greet the public, handle licenses, and assist with adoptions and shelter records. You will enter shelter data, manage licenses, and support animal care staff in daily operations.

This role requires a high school diploma, two years of data entry and customer service, and a Texas driver’s license, with Basic Animal Control Officer cert obtainable within one year.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years' experience with office machines (computers, copiers, fax machines, ten key, typewriter).
  • Two years with customer service and data entry.
  • Valid Texas Driver's license.
  • Experience working with and handling animals.
  • Ability to identify dog and cat breeds and wildlife including birds.
  • Acquire Basic Animal Control Officer certification within one year of hire date.
  • PREFERRED: Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Experience and good record of working with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Answer phone calls from citizens and assist front desk visitors with animals, adoptions, licenses and shelter records.
  • Assist visitors with lost and impounded pets, quarantined animals, pet adoptions and licenses; provide information on pet responsibility and laws.
  • Enter data on animals, owner information, licenses and required state reports; maintain monthly records.
  • Keep reception area neat; assist with daily animal inventory and organizing transport for spays/neuters.
  • Prepare renewal notices for licenses and citations for court dockets; communicate with Mayor's Action Line on complaints.

Job description

Duties:

Answers phone calls from citizens, assists customers at front desk with incoming and outgoing animals, pet adoptions, issues animal license, cares for sheltered animals and maintains shelter records. Rotates Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturdays. This position has no supervisory responsibilities and requires minimal supervision. Assists visitors to the shelter with lost and impounded pets, quarantined animals, pet adoptions, pet licenses, relinquished pets, and offers information about pet responsibility, city ordinances and state laws. Enters data concerning animals housed at the shelter, pet owner information, pet license information, spay/neuter information, and other information related to monthly reports and state mandated records for animal shelters. Assists with filing of documents. Regularly checks lost and found information to match lost animals with those in the shelter. Communicates and organizes pet transfers to other agencies, breed rescue groups and veterinarians. Tracks status of Action Line complaints and coordinates with dispatcher to ensure that complaints are handled and reported back to the Mayor's Action Line office. Keep the reception area organized, neat and clean. Assist with daily inventory of animals. Prepares citations and case information for monthly court dockets. Prepares renewal notices for pet licenses. Advises supervisor of situations that are unusual, complicated, require police back-up or extremely irate citizens. Assists Animal Care Technicians to prepare paperwork and organize the transport of animals to be spayed or neutered. Assists with preparing the shelter for visitors on Saturday mornings by cleaning the lobby and restrooms. Perform other duties as needed. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.

    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
