Ocean Career: AIS Fish Community Ecologist

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Fish Community Ecologist to support the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). DEEP is charged with conserving, improving and protecting the natural resources and the environment of the state of Connecticut as well as making cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy available for the people and businesses of the state.

Primary Function:

AIS is looking for a successful candidate to evaluate fish communities in the Long Island Sound (LIS) embayments and coastal areas and developing a scientifically-sound sampling plan. The successful candidate will lead a project assessing existing data on fish communities in LIS embayments and coastal areas, evaluating sampling methodologies, and developing recommendations for future monitoring. The goal is to support environmental decision making related to extreme weather and changing conditions by establishing a foundation for long-term fish community assessment.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Development of a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), which will define the procedures, standards, and quality controls to guide all data-related work throughout the project.
  • Compile and analyze existing nearshore fish community data local to LIS.
  • Evaluate and compare sampling methodologies appropriate for embayments and coastal areas.
  • Develop a standardized and recommended sampling plan.
  • Provide foundational input for the future development of fish community indices and thresholds.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree in ecology, marine biology or another related discipline
  • Strong track record in delivering projects of this nature and facilitating successful working relationships with municipal and state government.
  • Understanding of fish community sampling plans
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of Long Island Sound Fish Communities
  • Experience developing scientifically sound fish community sampling plans
Compensation:

Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates’ depth of experience. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Location: Remote (candidates who are local to the Long Island Sound are preferred)
