Job description

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Join Cleveland Clinic's Martin South Hospital where research and surgery are advanced, technology is leading-edge, patient care is world-class, and caregivers are family. This 100-bed hospital provides top-quality patient care to the communities in and around Martin County. Here, you will work alongside passionate physicians, nurses and other caregivers in a family-oriented, supportive environment.

Occupational Therapy Assistants are directly involved in patient care, often helping occupational therapists implement a specific treatment or rehabilitation plan. Assistants help patients through various rehabilitative activities, observing and recording their progress throughout different stages of the process. They might also help patients in dressing or grooming themselves when they are physically unable to do so themselves.

A caregiver in this position works days, 7:30AM - 4:00PM or 8:00AM-4:30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  1. Administer occupational therapy services for patients of all ages under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.
  2. Communicate changes in patient status to the primary therapist.
  3. Act as a clinical instructor and participate in the education and evaluation of students.
  4. Act as a resource for volunteers and observers.
  5. Participate in staff development, education programs and interdepartmental education.
  6. Direct and supervise the activities of support personnel while retaining responsibility for patient care.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  1. Associate's degree or certificate.
  2. Graduate of an Occupational Therapy Assistant program accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  3. Current state licensure as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA).
  4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  5. Performed at least 2 months of occupational therapy work experience under the direct supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.
  6. You must complete a two-hour course on Preventing Medical Errors.
  7. Pass the National Board of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT) COTA examination.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to walk without assistive device and to maintain balance despite sudden load in order to support patient from falling.
  2. Ability to meet physical demands characterized at the heavy level defined by 1993 Leonard Matheson and Ministry of Labor.
  3. Ability to lift and reach with arms sufficiently to lift patient's extremity during therapeutic treatment program.
  4. Sensation of touch and manual dexterity to be able to palpate muscle tension or to monitor patient pulse.
  5. Visual acuity to observe patient's gross and fine motor movements in order to analyze these movements and to read all patient monitors.
  6. Ability to speak clearly enough to instruct patients and families.
  7. Ability to hear at a conversational level to understand patient's description of symptoms and response to treatment.
