Job summary

Prince George County Public Schools is seeking an Occupational Therapist to evaluate and address perceptual, sensory, psycho-social, motor, and self-care deficits that affect students' learning. The role involves collaboration with classroom staff, families, and specialists to provide goal-directed, developmentally sequenced therapy and build effective participation in school activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited school.
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine and Certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource to school staff in developing a balanced program for students with impaired adaptive skills or functioning.
  • Assist teachers in observing and referring students with motor impairments.
  • Provide thorough assessment and documentation of developmental delays and motor/sensory challenges.
  • Develop and implement an individualized education plan (IEP) tailored to each student.
  • Provide individualized therapy programs to address sensory, perceptual, and motor needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement therapy in daily activities.
  • Provide information and support to parents and families.
  • Deliver in-service education and consult with teachers on occupational therapy topics.
  • Maintain ongoing records for students receiving therapy or services.
  • Maintain a directory of referred and eligible students and related services.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Special Education/Principal

SUPERVISES:

JOB GOAL:

To evaluate and provide purposeful, goal-directed, developmentally sequenced activities for the correction of perceptual, sensory, psycho-social, motor or self-care deficits that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for students whose adaptive skills and/or effective functioning in the environment have been impaired

  2. Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring students with suspected and identified gross and fine motor impairments

  3. Provide a thorough assessment and written documentation of testing of significant developmental delays, gross and fine motor functions, sensory motor and perceptual motor difficulties, social emotional adjustments, and self-help skills
  4. Develop and implement an Individualized Education Plan for each student, tailored to their unique educational needs
  5. Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing sensory, perceptual, and/or motor handicaps
  6. Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggesting the student's daily activities
  7. Provide information and support to parents and families when appropriate
  8. Provide in-service education and serve as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics related to occupational therapy
  9. Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided services
  10. Maintain a list of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services
  11. Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate
  12. Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
  13. Attend staff meetings, school Child Study Committee meetings, and Eligibility meetings on students who have been evaluated by an Occupational Therapist
  14. Perform other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Involves frequent traveling to and from schools, transporting equipment, lifting and attaching equipment by climbing on chairs, and the lifting and positioning of students

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

10-month contract; Salary based upon teacher's scale

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
