Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: The occupational therapist provides quality school-based occupational therapy services, including assessment, intervention, IEP planning and implementation, discharge planning, documentation, and communication with teachers, assistants, service providers, and families. Clinical judgment is used to develop individualized programming based on performance deficits and educational needs in areas such as role, social interaction, process skills, self-regulation, sensory processing, positioning for function, visual and fine motor skills, graphic communication, self-care, leisure/play, assistive technology, and community integration, following the AOTA Practice Framework. The therapist independently reviews outcomes and modifies programs based on data, ensuring student safety and protecting the SECEP liability. Direct supervision of occupational therapy assistants may be required.

Qualifications

• Completed an accredited occupational therapy program recognized by the NBCOT, with all fieldwork requirements finished.
• Current license issued by the Virginia Board of Medicine as an Occupational Therapist.
• Preferably two years of experience, ideally in a school or pediatric setting.
• Knowledge of autism is beneficial.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to varied school sites.
• Physical ability to perform itinerant OT duties (standing, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling) and exert 20‑50 lbs of force.
• Adequate visual and hearing acuity for assessment and documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings, offer recommendations, and develop IEP goals.
  • Provide targeted, evidence‑based intervention to facilitate student participation and occupational performance in the school environment, ensuring safety and effective pacing.
  • Consult with the school-based team to achieve student outcomes.
  • Adapt and modify environments, equipment, and materials, including assistive technology, and train instructional staff to meet individual student needs.
  • Educate students, staff, and families in occupational skills, health maintenance, and safety.
  • Monitor and reassess the effects of intervention, determining whether to continue, modify, or discontinue services.
  • Document occupational therapy services to ensure accountability.
  • Supervise occupational therapy assistants and assume responsibility for students served by assistants.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state, and local legislation and regulations governing occupational therapy in schools.
  • Determine the need for evaluation, select and administer appropriate assessment tools.
  • Interpret evaluation data and write comprehensive reports highlighting strengths and barriers.
  • Develop intervention plans based on evaluation information.
  • Prepare written materials (attendance, notes, correspondence, treatment plans, evaluations, reports) for documentation and reference.
  • Adhere to professional, moral, and ethical standards with personal integrity.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance student learning.
  • Collaborate with OT staff, peers, school personnel, and the community to promote student learning.
  • Provide service to the profession, SECEP, and the community.
  • Perform related work as required.
Job Requirements
