Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking an Occupational Therapist for per diem coverage to deliver direct and indirect patient care, in person and via telehealth, primarily for adults and older adults. The OT will assess, plan, and implement therapy services, document care, and may supervise support staff where allowed.

Flexibility to work across UCSF Medical Center locations is required to support interdisciplinary teams. The position emphasizes patient-centered care, adherence to safety and privacy policies,

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of general patient care experience.

  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Basic computer skills for word processing and online communication.

  • Willingness to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Job Description

The Occupational Therapist per diem reports to the Clinical Supervisor/Manager and provides direct and indirect patient care services in person and via telehealth. The OT works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, though pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. Under general direction and within a specific therapy discipline, the per diem OT plans and administers a full range of OT services for patients with various physical and cognitive impairments, including patient evaluations, therapeutic interventions, intervention planning, and other discipline‑specific skills. The OT maintains all applicable documentation related to patient care services and may supervise support personnel as permitted by state practice acts, including COTAs, rehabilitation aides, and OT/COTA students.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate service excellence by following the Everyday PRIDE Guide and Medical Center standards, including professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence, and by providing effective communication with patients, visitors, staff, and students.
  • Use effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrate proper telephone techniques; act as escort for patients or family members needing directions; show sensitivity to cultural differences; exhibit teamwork and a positive attitude.
  • Apply PRIDE values and practices in difficult situations, maintain privacy, confidentiality, and security policies regarding PHI, and comply with safety and infection‑control policies.
  • Assume accountability for improving quality metrics and meeting organizational targets.
  • Keep working areas neat, orderly, and clutter‑free; adhere to cleaning processes; report broken equipment; dispose of litter; post flyers only in designated areas; report unsafe conditions; protect the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
  • Perform any other duties related to patient care activities as required.
  • Perform any duties assigned by the assistant director or director.
Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum 1 year of general patient care experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.
  • Effective interpersonal, time‑management, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred
  • Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
  • Graduate degree or certificate in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
  • Experience with OP OT services, including telehealth.
Populations Served

Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on patient needs, including age‑specific requirements for adults, geriatric, neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations.
