Job summary

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital seeks a qualified Occupational Therapist to provide direct patient care across pediatric to geriatric populations. You will develop individualized goals and treatment plans based on comprehensive evaluations and coordinate with an interdisciplinary team to support optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities include documentation, billing, supervision of students, and contributing to department operations while maintaining HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate as required for OT practice.
• 4+ years of experience required.
• New York State OT license required.
• BLS or ACLS preferred.

Overview

Provides direct restorative and/or maintenance treatment of patients, carries out administrative duties associated with patient care, and contributes to department operations appropriate to the specific site.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for direct patient care as appropriate and as defined by position level:
• Performs standardized evaluations of patients using standard techniques.
• Develops appropriate long- and short-term goals.
• Develops basic treatment plans based on evaluation results that leads to achievement of goals.
• Provides age-appropriate treatment based on evaluation results that leads to achievement of goals.
• Evaluates and recommends patient need for specialized equipment, distributes information to patient on purchase or arranges for order and distribution of apparatus, familiar with insurance requirements.
• Completes documentation according to facility time frames and requirements.
• Correctly identifies and bills for therapy services rendered.
• Demonstrates awareness of safety precautions and ability to carry out emergency procedures.
• Attends and participates in in-service programs.
• Provides patient/family education and training and participates in family conferences.
• Communicates with patients clearly and adjusts approach based on their needs/abilities.
• Provides up to 100% direct patient care.
• Contributes to efficient hospital/facility, department and team functioning.

• Demonstrates an awareness of limitations and seeks supervision appropriately.
• Modifies performance in response to supervisor’s feedback.
• Demonstrates the ability to translate knowledge of physical, psycho-social and cognitive-perceptual changes related to age into assessments, treatment plans and treatment modalities for pediatric, adolescent, young adult, adult and geriatric patients/residents.
• Management/Administrative Duties:
• Contributes to clinic operations at the direction of the supervisor/manager.
• Can assist with staff development from clinical and administrative perspective at the direction of supervisor/manager.
• Orient staff to location; orientation to include educational/co-treatment schedule, teaching expectations, etc. at the direction of supervisor/manager.
• Participate in ongoing mentoring of newly hired staff, complete clinic orientation, review charting as requested by supervisor or manager.
• Maintains annual requirements for position:
• Completes assigned department orientation material.
• Participates in new staff orientation/competency assessment.
• Maintains professional license.
• Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.

• Practices Standard Precautions. Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
• Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
• Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital’s policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
• Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.

Requirements

• BS Required or
• Master's Required or
• Doctor of Science Required.
• 4+ years of experience Required.
• Works with patients, families and interdisciplinary team, including OT staff, Physicians, and other disciplines.
• Must be able to perform dependent assist transfers.
• Able to monitor vital signs (HR, BP).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with patients and families of various backgrounds and interests.
• Shows an interest in pursuing continuing education activities.
• Occupational Therapists - New York State Board of Occupational Therapy Required.
• BLS or ACLS Preferred.
