Job summary

Hennepin Healthcare is seeking an Occupational Therapist II for our inpatient/acute care team in downtown Minneapolis. This full-time role offers day shifts with start times around 7:30–8:00 AM and includes every 4th weekend.

The candidate should have acute care experience and be ready to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities include evaluation, discharge planning, and education, with supervision of OT aides and continued program development.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an occupational therapy curriculum accredited by the AMA.
  • Minimum of 2 fulltime years of experience (4,160 hours).
  • CPR certification and NBCOT eligibility preferred.

SUMMARY

We are currently seeking an Occupational Therapist II to join our inpatient/acute care team. This fulltime role will work days (start time of either 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM), including every 4th weekend. Preferred candidates will have acute care experience.

Purpose of this position: In collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, provides therapeutic services including evaluation, treatment, discharge planning and education.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs and documents comprehensive occupational therapy evaluations
  • Develops and documents patient care plans to promote optimal function and safety
  • Observes, evaluates and documents patient's progress
  • Participates in hospital rounds and patient care conferences
  • Educates patients and care gives on therapeutic techniques, cares and treatments
  • Completes all documentation and charges of services per departmental standards
  • Functions as a clinical instructor for occupational therapy students
  • Directs and supervises activities performed by the OT aides consistent with their training and skill (patient transfers, patient transport, preparation of patient and equipment for treatment, selected treatment procedures, clerical duties, and departmental maintenance)
  • Properly applies and operates rehabilitative equipment
  • Develops and conducts occupational therapy in-services for other staff
  • Orients and mentors newly assigned staff
  • Serves as a clinical resource for other staff
  • Participates in program development
  • Represents the occupational therapy department on committees and provides consultation to other departments and agencies as assigned
  • Assumes responsibilities of the supervisor as assigned during the supervisor's absence
  • Provides work direction for clerical staff
  • Assists in monitoring the quality of occupational therapy activities and services
  • Functions as a resource for departmental policies and procedures
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an occupational therapy curriculum accredited by the American Medical Association
  • Minimum of 2 fulltime years of experience (4,160 hours)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous clinical experience/rehabilitation experience
  • CPR certification
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities
  • Knowledge of policies/procedures and practice standards; occupational therapy theory, techniques, and treatment, physical therapy and orthopedic equipment; counseling and educational techniques; bandaging and wrapping techniques
  • Mental Health
  • Current knowledge, theory, practice standards, and sound clinical judgment are necessary to support adults with mental health diagnoses
  • Experience with group facilitation and group dynamics
  • Experience with motivational interviewing to facilitate patient education, development of communication and social skills, healthy coping skills
  • Ability to support development of healthy and effective daily routines to promote well-being, health maintenance, stress management, and engagement in functional life activities
  • Experience with therapeutic use of sensory modulation and sensory strategies
  • Ability to perform cognitive and performance-based assessments to evaluate patient needs, interpret results, and develop appropriate interventions and recommendations
  • Provide care that is trauma-informed, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive
  • Ability to perform professional occupational therapy techniques and treatment; calibrate and operate occupational therapy equipment
  • Ability to provide work direction for ancillary personnel
  • Ability to counsel and instruct patients and families; ability to recognize and document patient progress
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other members of the medical team
  • Ability to interact with individuals of widely diverse lifestyles including ability to deal objectively with individuals whose attitudes and behaviors differ from his/her own
  • Ability to read and interpret written instructions, patient charts, and physicians' notes
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures in an advisory capacity (educate)
License/Certifications
  • Certified or eligible for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification examination for Occupational Therapist, Registered. As a condition of employment, employees hired on an "or eligible" status must take and pass the first available examination after his/her date of hire
  • Proof of Minnesota Board of Occupational Therapy Practitioner License or temporary license
