Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking an Inpatient Occupational Therapist to provide comprehensive OT evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning for patients across a Level I Trauma Center. Work a Monday–Friday schedule, with weekend/holiday rotations as required, in a fast-paced acute care setting.

The role emphasizes evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to maximize functional independence and safe transitions of care.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree and PA licensure required for Occupational Therapy in Pennsylvania.
  • Demonstrated clinical reasoning and ability to document evaluations and plans clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patient history and adopt precautions and diagnoses for treatment planning.
  • Develop and implement OT treatment plans and discharge planning for a medically complex caseload.
  • Supervise OT assistants or aides and coordinate plan with the treatment team.
  • Maintain patient records and ensure documentation meets standards.
  • Participate in Occupational Therapy student programs under supervision.

Inpatient Occupational Therapist
Excellent Benefits/40 Hours Per Week/Fulltime

Schedule: M-F, 8:00am -4:30pm

  • Participation in weekend, and holiday rotations, as assigned, is required to meet the needs of the Occupational Therapy department
POSITION SUMMARY

The Occupational Therapist (OTR) is responsible for providing comprehensive occupational therapy evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning for patients across a Level I Trauma Center. This role manages a medically complex caseload, including trauma, neurological, orthopedic, surgical, critical care, and medically fragile patients, while collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes and ensure safe transitions of care. The OTR utilizes evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, and patient-centered interventions to maximize functional independence, promote recovery, and support efficient throughput in a fast-paced acute care environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Evaluates the patient's history and extracts precautions, contraindications, diagnoses, goals, potential and any pertinent information that would affect treatment.
  • Evaluates the patient with objective measurements.
  • Interprets evaluation findings and discusses them with the patient, family, significant others, and treatment team.
  • Develops treatment goals and plans, which may include intervention/adaptation strategies within the realm of the physician's prescription and makes recommendations to the physician concerning the patient's treatment.
  • Supervises occupational therapists' assistants or aides in the performance of treatment procedure.
  • Coordinates treatment plan with the patient, family, significant others, and treatment team through active participation in meetings and departmental conferences.
  • Implements treatment plans and supervises the patient's use of equipment and takes the necessary precautions in implementing the prescribed treatment.
  • Monitors and re-evaluates the patient's response to intervention and modifies treatment in agreement with the physician.
  • Maintains documentation in the patient's records of evaluation, treatment, assessment, and plan.
  • Complies with the established standards, policies, procedures; including billing, reimbursement, scheduling and emergency procedures according to departmental guidelines.
  • Maintains and monitors own work schedule and that of team.
  • Reviews the quality and appropriateness of the services delivered for effectiveness and efficiency using predetermined quality assurance criteria.
  • Participates in Occupational Therapy student programs under the supervision of the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master of Science degree, as well as PA licensure, issued by the State Board of Occupational Therapy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least one year of acute care or inpatient rehab experience
