Job summary

Beacon Health System in Dowagiac, MI seeks an Occupational Therapist to evaluate patients and plan treatment programs to restore function after disease, injury or surgery. The role supports Swing Bed services and requires coordinating with the Rehab team to ensure quality patient care.

You will educate patients and caregivers about goals and home programs, document progress in the medical record, and participate in rotations, meetings and departmental activities.

Reports to the Supervisor of Rehab Services. Evaluates patients and plans treatment programs. Also, performs occupational therapy procedures to restore function, prevent disability and maximize potential and quality of life following disease, injury or surgery.

Provides occupational therapy procedures for patients to restore function, prevent disability and maximize potential and quality of life by:
  • Evaluating and assessing patients.
  • Planning appropriate treatment based on the referral and evaluation and establishing reasonable goals.
  • Educating the patient and/or care giver regarding treatment goals, treatment methods, and potential treatment outcome(s).
  • Performing treatments according to established plans and ensuring that the patient is progressing toward stated goals, while utilizing appropriate procedures, equipment and techniques within the scope of occupational therapy.
  • Instructing patients and/or family members in home programs, injury prevention, etc.
  • Documenting in the medical record according to established criteria.
  • Reevaluating patients and assessing their progress; also making recommendations regarding disposition.
  • Communicating, verbally and in writing, with other healthcare professionals including patient referral sources.
  • Completes the Initial Activity Assessment for all Swing Bed patients upon admission, as part of the patient's Activity Plan of Care.
  • Develops the activity plan for all Swing Bed patients and ensures activities are carried out by the Swing Bed Coordinator.
Supports The Department By
  • Participating in work rotations, weekend and weekday hours.
  • Leading or directing the activities of Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA), Occupational Therapy Assistants, attendants, volunteers, aides and Interns; ensuring that department policies and procedures are enforced and quality patient care is provided.
  • Participating in staff meetings, rehabilitation team and orthopedic conferences and other meetings as needed or required.
  • Assisting with departmental maintenance and supplies.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by
  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
Organizational Responsibilities
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
  • Serves as a Clinical Instructor for Therapy Students as requested by Departmental Leadership
Education And Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree of Occupational Therapy from an accredited school of occupational therapy. Requires a license to practice occupational therapy in Indiana.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Requires the ability to effectively use all evaluation tools, modalities, exercise equipment, ADL adaptive equipment, etc.typically used to provide occupational therapy.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills needed to communicate in a tactful, sincere, effective manner with patients, families, healthcare professionals and various Hospital staff.
  • Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with federal and hospital regulations regarding protected health information and patient privacy.
  • Attendance at one annual orientation in service each year to review hospital policies and procedures is mandatory or view staff orientation presentation on the intranet and turn in quiz to Human Resources.
  • Must maintain current BLS certification.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands and patient care activities.
  • May be exposed to bio-hazards and normal hazards encountered in a community environment.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
