Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of UM-Flint EHS, your role will involve on-campus work, inspections of work areas, shops, studios, and laboratories, and communication with area managers and staff to support their compliance with university guidelines and regulatory requirements. You will collaborate with campus partners to make recommendations and verify the implementation of corrective actions.

Responsibilities
  1. Research Regulatory requirements, Review & Update Programs and Plans
  • Remain current on rules/regulations related to environmental health and occupational safety, adopting proactive practices that foster a Campus Culture of Safety and Preparedness.
  • Review and revise safety and health programs as directed by the EHS Director, enhancing supporting materials.
  • Maintain health and safety compliance programs, posters, website, and other resources in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Inspections and Equipment Testing/Training
    • Support safety programs through inspections, education, and documentation.
    • Evaluate workspaces for compliance, summarize findings, and collaborate on improvements.
    • Inspect buildings and safety equipment, document conditions, and generate reports.
    • Provide training and guidance to employees and students.
    • Develop equipment tags and assist departments with compliance.
    • Calibrate air monitoring equipment regularly.
    • Coordinate monitoring and compliance for cranes, AEDs, and lasers.
  • Hazardous and Regulated Waste Management
    • Inspect waste storage areas and containers.
    • Develop educational materials and coordinate waste collection.
    • Assist with environmental compliance related to waste storage and disposal.
    • Respond to hazardous material spills and coordinate response efforts, maintaining HAZWOPER certification.
  • EHS Website Review and Enhancements
    • Maintain EHS website pages and links.
    • Coordinate with departments to post information on campus digital signs.
  • Chemical Inventory and Reconciliation
    • Assist with chemical inventories and compliance.
    • Complete annual reporting requirements.
    • Review DHS COI on campus annually.
  • Job Hazard Evaluations and PPE Assessments
    • Coordinate and complete hazard evaluations and PPE assessments.
    • Conduct safety workshops for students and employees.
    • Communicate safety information via various campus channels.

    Other duties may be assigned by the EHS Director as necessary for operational needs.

    Required Qualifications
    • 5+ years of experience in environmental health and occupational safety or a related field.
    • Understanding of environmental health and safety principles and regulations.
    • Responding to emergencies with HAZWOPER certification and respirator use.
    • Knowledge of safe chemical and biological laboratory operations.
    • Proficiency in Google products and Microsoft Windows.
    • Strong customer service skills.
