Job summary

The State of Maine is seeking an Occupational Health Specialist to join SafetyWorks! for on-site consultations and trainings across industries.

You will perform complex hazard investigations, collect data, analyze environmental health risks, and provide training under limited supervision. Responsibilities include field visits, sample collection, preparing reports, and advising other agencies on safety practices in accordance with federal and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in industrial hygiene, toxicology, chemistry, or related science with 2 years specialized experience in chemical/environmental/industrial hygiene.
• Equivalent experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our team as an Occupational Health Specialist with the SafetyWorks! on-site consultation and training program. Responsibilities include providing on-site consultations and trainings to various industries and conducting complex occupational health hazard investigations. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Job Responsibilities

• Collects and analyzes information regarding industrial processes in order to identify potential health hazards.
• Visits industries in order to gather samples and measure environmental hazards in work areas.
• Conducts field visits and report preparation in order to ensure work is accomplished properly and applicable Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines are followed.
• Analyzes instrument readings and test reports in order to identify and evaluate environmental health hazards.
• Advices other State agencies and field staff in order to provide information on hazardous materials, toxic substances, and consumer product safety.
• Collects and compiles statistical data and prepares reports in order to provide information to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
• Prepares and presents instruction in order to train others in OSHA standards and regulations.

Qualifications/Preferences

• Knowledge of statistics, organic and inorganic chemistry, air sample collection methods and techniques, general industrial processes and operations, laboratory analysis methods and procedures, occupational health hazards found in the workplace and physiology and toxicology.
• Ability to identify, evaluate and control occupational health hazards, prepare complex technical reports, communicate effectively, write clearly and effectively and present training programs and ability to conduct research.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Bachelors Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Chemistry, or related science and two (2) years specialized experience in a chemical, environmental, or related industrial hygiene field. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
