Job description

The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a tertiary academic medical center serving as a referral hub for Eastern Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina regions.

The inpatient obstetric service is staffed by labor and delivery nurses, patient care technicians, OB/Gyn providers, and resident physicians, with 24-hour anesthesia and neonatal care availability.

The Laborist coverage offers dedicated oversight and a team focused on managing patients in labor during their shift. Our hybrid model emphasizes quality, safety, and education in women's healthcare, expanding beyond obstetrics to include complex gynecologic medical and surgical management. The Academic OB/Gyn Hospitalist role includes labor and delivery shifts, gynecology service coverage, resident clinic oversight, and departmental leadership.

Ideal candidates are experienced physicians committed to patient care and resident education, possessing excellent clinical and teaching skills, comfortable in an evidence-based academic environment with students, residents, fellows, advanced practice nurses, midwives, and colleagues.

Implementation of the Hospitalist model has enabled UTMC to:

  1. Optimize patient safety and quality outcomes
  2. Standardize obstetric services
  3. Enhance resident education consistency
  4. Improve patient flow efficiency

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Staffing the day shift of L&D from 7:15 am to 5 pm when assigned
  • Responding to house officers and maintaining visibility on the unit
  • Communicating with anesthesia and other attendings to assist in centralized care alongside the RN Team Leader
  • Providing comprehensive intrapartum care, including antepartum assessment, labor management, and delivery
  • Managing emergencies related to early pregnancy and pregnancy loss
  • Presenting and teaching at 7:15 am board sign-out
  • Communicating with nighttime attending at 5 pm sign-out
  • Providing postpartum rounding for complicated patients
  • Overseeing triage patients and consulting with midwives for higher-level care
  • Supervising infant circumcisions for house staff neonates
  • Responding to OB trauma pages and providing ER consultations
  • Overseeing and managing house staff GYN service, including inpatient rounds, consults, surgeries, and outpatient services
  • Participating in peer review, performance improvement, simulations, and academic activities
  • Engaging in GME scholarly activities and departmental committees

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Medicine or Osteopathy from an accredited institution or ECFMG certification
  • Completion of an approved OB/Gyn residency program
  • Active candidate or board-certified in ABOG
  • Experience with operative vaginal deliveries, complicated cesareans, and postpartum management

Schedule

Estimated 15-18 shifts per month, excluding vacations, CME, and holidays, with shifts including:

  • Labor and delivery shifts (7 am-5 pm or 5 pm-7 am)
  • Resident outpatient clinic supervision and administrative time
  • Gynecologic surgeries and inpatient/consult service coverage
  • Administrative duties and private outpatient opportunities
  • Overnight shifts followed by 24-hour off periods

Specific schedules are coordinated with departmental leadership.
