Obstetric (OB) Instructor – Practical Nurse

Education Department. Reports to Director of Nursing.

Job Summary

The Obstetric (OB) instructor acts as the subject matter expert and is entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills each student needs to be successful. The instructor provides quality delivery of assigned courses, evaluates and resolves student questions, issues and problems, and ensures appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of the student, Dorsey College, and regulatory agencies. The instructor is expected to be motivating, fair, impartial, creative, dedicated, and professional.

Essential Functions
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver quality classroom instruction in lecture, clinical, and/or laboratory format based on the approved course outline and utilizing a variety of approved course materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities.
  • Assess student learning using appropriate methods and demonstrate effectiveness through strong outcomes in retention, success, and attendance.
  • Conduct engaging classroom lectures and/or labs based on the course outline.
  • Motivate students by demonstrating sensitivity for concerns and actively involving them in discussions and activities.
  • Advise students on attendance, grades, and issues throughout the module and mid‑term to ensure successful completion of their course.
  • Contact absentee students by text, e‑mail, and/or phone as needed to improve retention.
  • Manage classroom environment through compliance with campus policies including classroom management, attendance, punctuality, and professionalism.
  • Ensure instructor preparedness before class by listing Instructor Name and Contact Information, Date, Class Name, Day’s Objectives, and Next Session Objectives on the white board.
  • Monitor and prepare supplies and equipment to ensure readiness prior to class and inform appropriate campus personnel when attention is needed.
  • Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in‑service meetings, and attend commencement.
  • Demonstrate professional growth in the subject through membership and participation in educational associations, professional organizations, continuing education, related business experience, educational research, and awareness of current practices and standards.
  • Actively support other departments such as Financial Aid, Admissions, and Career Services.
  • Ensure that all educational activity is conducted in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement by working within the guidelines of the Faculty Development Program or other identified criteria such as success rate, retention rate, attendance rate, student evaluations of instructor, and final exam pass rates.
  • Maintain employer relationships by at least annual contacts with employers, both virtual or in person, and document visits on the Liaison Form.
  • Facilitate all courses included in the curriculum when OB is not available or when necessary, except Pediatrics unless experienced.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and active listening.
  • Strong time‑management skills and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, show extreme resourcefulness and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures and support the Director of Nursing, Managing Director, and the needs of the campus.
  • Positive attitude toward school activities.
  • Proficiency with basic office equipment, computers, and computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, unencumbered Michigan licensure as a registered nurse (RN).
  • Experience in Obstetrics is required (e.g., Labor and Delivery background and/or caring for child‑bearing mothers as a Nurse Practitioner or comparable position).
  • Must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing science (BSN) or be actively pursuing a BSN (documented enrollment required). Courses not entitled "NUR" may be facilitated by a qualified degree in the subject taught.
  • One year of documented experience related to the course taught is preferred.
Working / Physical Demands

May be required to work late and occasional weekends. The employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear; stand; walk; sit for extended periods; and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment.
