Job description

Position Summary

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) is seeking an Obsolescence Surveillance Engineer to support lifecycle sustainment activities for the Abrams and Stryker combat vehicle programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for proactively identifying, analyzing, and mitigating component obsolescence risks across complex military vehicle systems.

This position supports the long-term readiness and sustainment of critical defense platforms by conducting ongoing obsolescence surveillance of electronic, electrical, electromechanical, and mechanical components used throughout the vehicle Technical Data Package (TDP). The candidate will work closely with engineering, supply chain, configuration management, and program teams to ensure timely identification and resolution of obsolescence issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform obsolescence surveillance and analysis on Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Indented Parts Lists (IPLs) associated with Abrams and Stryker vehicle configurations.
  • Identify obsolete, discontinued, end-of-life (EOL), and at-risk components using commercial obsolescence management tools and industry databases.
  • Perform Year-to-End-of-Life (YTEOL) predictions and lifecycle risk assessments.
  • Research and recommend suitable replacement components, alternate sources, and form-fit-function substitutes.
  • Analyze Product Change Notifications (PCNs), End-of-Life (EOL) notices, and manufacturer lifecycle announcements.
  • Prepare obsolescence summary reports, health status reports, risk assessments, and program metrics.
  • Support Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) mitigation efforts.
  • Process and maintain BOMs within obsolescence surveillance tools and databases.
  • Conduct manual research for components not recognized by commercial obsolescence tools.
  • Coordinate with design engineering teams to evaluate replacement part impacts and implementation strategies.
  • Work with Configuration Management and Product Data Management organizations to improve BOM accuracy and data integrity.
  • Present findings and recommendations to program management, engineering teams, and customer representatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering, sustainment, lifecycle management, supply chain engineering, or obsolescence management experience.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and other standard business tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with obsolescence management, DMSMS, lifecycle forecasting, or sustainment engineering.
  • Experience using tools such as SiliconExpert, Z2Data, PCN Intelligence, BOM Intelligence, or similar lifecycle management platforms.
  • Experience with Teamcenter or other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Familiarity with military vehicle systems, weapon systems, or defense industry products.
  • Knowledge of configuration management processes and Technical Data Packages (TDPs).
  • Experience analyzing electronic components, mechanical components, and supply chain risks.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Department of Defense acquisition and sustainment practices.
Desired Characteristics
  • Strong research and investigative skills.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and BOM structures.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to risk identification.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work across engineering, supply chain, and program organizations.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
