Job summary

Caltech seeks an observatory technician for Palomar Mountain with responsibilities spanning installation, operation, and training of scientific instrumentation on the P200 telescope. You will work with P60 and P48 as needed and troubleshoot critical systems to ensure peak performance for researchers.

Ideal candidates have a STEM degree and proven scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, IRAF), plus the ability to lift 50 pounds and operate safely at 5,600-foot altitude.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a scientific/engineering/tech field is required.
• Computing and software troubleshooting skills are required.
• Proficient with Windows and Linux operating systems.
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python, MATLAB, and IRAF.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work safely in confined or elevated environments.

Responsibilities

• Confirm proper daily installation and performance of scientific instrumentation on the P200 telescope.
• Design, troubleshoot, and test critical telescope and subsystem software/hardware components.
• Train and support astronomer and engineer customers in using installed instrumentation.
• Troubleshoot and repair problems with instrumentation, telescopes, and observatory systems.
• Contribute to planning, design, and implementation of critical sub-system upgrades.
• Respond to telescope and instrument issues day or night.
