Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an OB Surgical Technician for the Labor & Delivery unit in Jersey City on the night shift. The role involves preparing the sterile field, passing instruments, and supporting the surgical team during cesarean and gynecological procedures, under nursing and physician supervision.

Required CST NBSTSA certification, completion of a Surgical Technician program, and at least 1 year of surgical experience preferred, especially in labor and delivery.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Completion of Surgical Technician training program.
• Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists as a CST Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA) required.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in a surgical setting preferred; labor and delivery experience highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Prepares the operating room for cesarean sections and OB/GYN procedures by setting up instruments, sterile drapes, and supplies.
• Scrubs in and maintains aseptic technique during procedures.
• Anticipates needs of the surgical team and passes instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures.
• Performs counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the RN according to hospital policy.
• Ensures proper care and handling of surgical specimens.
• Decontaminates, cleans, and restocks instruments post-procedure.
• Assists in emergency obstetrical situations (stat cesarean sections, postpartum hemorrhage).
• Maintains competency in neonatal resuscitation equipment.
• Assists with general patient care tasks (vital signs, transport, hygiene).
• Stocks labor rooms, ORs, and supply carts; supports quality improvement activities.
