Job summary

Nyman Associates, Inc. seeks a compassionate Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) to provide individualized instruction for students with vision needs. The role focuses on travel skills, accessibility, and collaboration with teachers and parents.

Responsibilities include assessing needs, developing learning materials, using tactile maps and GPS devices, and guiding students to travel independently within school environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in teaching for the Visually Impaired and/or Orientation and Mobility.
• Orientation and Mobility Specialist certificate.

Responsibilities

• Prepare students with visual impairments to travel independently and safely.
• Perform evaluations that focus on long and short-term needs of the student.
• Prepare meaningful instruction geared to students' assessed needs, IEP goals and objectives, functioning level, and motivation level.
• Prepare and use equipment and materials such as tactile maps, models, optical devices, pre-canes, GPS devices, and others.
• Provide orientation of new buildings and new class schedules as needed.
• Provide instruction/information on recreational leisure skills, outdoor travel skills, residential, and commercial public transportation.
