NYU Langone Food Access Navigators is seeking a full-time AmeriCorps member to connect Sunset Park residents to support services, eligibility programs, and resources in English, Spanish, or Mandarin. You will assist with applications, coordinate pantry activities, and help residents access long-term food security through wrap-around services.
The role involves community outreach, case management, and direct pantry coordination, with training and team participation as part of the position.
The mission of NYU Langone Family Health Centers is to improve the overall health of the communities served by delivering high quality, culturally competent primary care and related services within community-based settings. The Table Food Pantry provides emergency food to over 5,000 people each month and connects those in need with wrap-around services to ensure long-term food security & support. Sunset Park AmeriCorps Food Access Navigators (AFAN) will use a "screen and intervene" approach to connect residents with available resources. This approach involves a food insecurity screening to determine if the resident is at risk of being food insecure. Once a resident is deemed at risk of being food insecure, AFANs will use an active referral and case management process to assist residents in obtaining resources. The AFAN member will directly reach out to the resident about the programs and help them apply. The screen and intervene approach acknowledges and responds to the challenges to obtaining resources such as language and cultural barriers, the often challenging application process, and the confusion about resources residents are actually eligible for. AFANs will be able to assist residents in their preferred language and help them navigate the complex application process. Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as selection is continuous and the cohort may fill before the application deadline. Members will serve M-F during business hours. Members will participate in team days, service projects and selected site specific trainings. Must be able to speak English & Spanish or English & Mandarin. Full time NYU Langone Sunset Park AmeriCorps members receive a living Allowance of $23,000, as well an Education Award of $7,395.
The AmeriCorps member will serve the Spanish or Mandarin speaking residents of Sunset Park to access support services, counseling, and resources. Activities such as helping clients apply for food stamps, child care, vocational services, etc. will be conducted. Members will also provide direct assistance to the food pantry, including set up and preparation on Thursdays, and coordination and distribution on Friday service days within the community. This is a great opportunity for applicants interested in social work and/or public health.
