Job summary

SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity) is seeking an ELA Associate Instructor for 9th–11th grade to work on-site in New York City, partnering with SEO High School Scholars. You will co-teach ELA and advisory, support students with rigorous instruction, and help maintain an engaging, inclusive classroom.

This seasonal, part-time role requires attending orientation, following lesson plans, using Brightspace, Nearpod, GSuite, and Zoom, and collaborating with staff and coaches.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in content-related field.
• Teaching certification, K-12 classroom teaching experience, and/or experience teaching at the college or university level.
• Reliable personal laptop to carry out instructional and administrative duties.
• Experience working with high school-aged students.
• Comfortable with navigating technological learning systems.
• Expertise and depth of knowledge in advanced high school English and Humanities subjects.
• Eagerness to engage in conversations analyzing the historical and continued causes of societal ills and challenges.

Responsibilities

• Co-teach four periods including ELA and Advisory.
• When asked to cover for another instructor, lead the class on your own.
• Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, adhering to SEO’s criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement.
• Learn and efficiently utilize instructional technologies (Brightspace, Nearpod, GSuite, Zoom) in blended learning.
• Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans before teaching.
• Implement adjustments to pacing and activities based on student needs.
• Host open-door lunch tutoring sessions with Scholars.
• Maintain restorative classroom culture to promote student engagement and positive relationships.
• Attend all scheduled meetings, trainings, check-ins, and respond to communications in a timely manner.
• Meet with instructional coach at least twice per semester for feedback.
