Job description

Virtual

Location: Flexible (100% remote)

Many schools are working to enhance student preparation for today’s workforce by expanding opportunities for purpose-driven career experience and durable skill development. By deepening these efforts, especially for historically marginalized and BIPOC youth, schools can further empower students to navigate career exploration with confidence and success. Only 30% of high school graduates feel prepared for life after graduation, and less than 25% of high school students report having a clear sense of purpose. While research shows a correlation between students’ emotional wellness and their engagement in career exploration, emotional wellness has remained a serious issue even post-COVID; 40% of students–especially BIPOC students–have experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. nXu was established to address these challenges.

nXu’s mission is to prepare students, particularly from BIPOC and historically marginalized communities, to thrive in today’s rapidly changing world of work by supporting their development of durable skills, resilience, sense of belonging, and emotional wellness.

Through a three-pronged partnership model, we atnXu (short for nexus) partner with schools and youth organizations by providing: (1) nXu’s validated curriculum; (2) educator training and tailored implementation coaching, as well as ongoing professional development opportunities; and (3) our research-based assessment system that allows partners to assess implementation efficacy and that also serves as a social-emotional screener.

We seek an exceptional and passionate Curriculum Writer to create our K-5 durable skills and emotional wellness curriculum. This individual will build on our existing middle and high school curriculum. nXu’s current curriculum supports young people to become purpose-driven planners, engaged community contributors, emotionally intelligent collaborators, resilient problem-solvers, and effective communicators. This individual will leverage a K-5 scope and sequence that nXu has recently created. The ideal candidate has a sincere passion for curriculum development, thorough knowledge of durable skills, K-5 students, and an appreciation for purpose development. Moreover, this candidate possesses a deep understanding of how to create curricula that is resonant with K-5 students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, and that can be implemented by educators in a wide range of teaching contexts and modalities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the nXu curriculum team on the final K-5 scope + sequence and topics per grade level.
  • Write 12-160 K-5 lesson plans (depending on capacity) for educators including facilitation guides, student materials, and associated slide decks for each lesson using existing nXu curricular templates. (Here is an example of nXu lesson materials.)
  • Leverage research and a variety of media sources to design lessons that are developmentally appropriate, easily accessible, engaging, experiential, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive.
  • Revise lessons based on feedback.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications:

  • Previous K-5 curriculum development experience (especially related to durable skills and emotional wellness curriculum) creating content that has been implemented by a wide range of educators in multiple educational contexts.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience seeking and integrating feedback from multiple constituents.
  • Comfort working with a remote team, often independently.
  • Concrete evidence of keen interest in, and exploration of, their self-development.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in working in a fast-paced, start-up environment.
  • Belief in nXu’s mission and a passion for helping other people--especially youth--explore, articulate and pursue their purpose in life.

COMPENSATION

nXu offers competitive compensation for this consulting role.
