Hiring range $51,604.59 - $56,765.05

Full-time with benefits including paid medical, dental, vision and life insurance; retirement and 401(k) plans; and, paid sick, vacation and holiday leave.

REQUIRED - Must complete pre-employment screenings including criminal background check, fingerprint background, drug test, motor vehicle report, and education screening. Offers of employment are conditional on acceptable results.

General Statement of Duties

Work in this class involves providing fundamental nutrition services to clients in the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Program at the Carteret County Health Department. Work is performed independently according to established procedures and minimal daily instruction is required. Performs support work assisting clients participating in the WIC Program, performing nutrition assessments, prescribing plan of care based on client needs, providing nutrition education and counseling to clients, preparing and maintaining files and records, and preparing reports.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Work involves conducting interviews to obtain health and personal information; independently assessing nutritional and medical risk; establishing program eligibility; developing corresponding plans of care; and determining an appropriate food prescription. Medical data and socioeconomic information are analyzed to plan appropriate, client-centered nutrition interventions. Employees are responsible for providing individual and small group nutrition counseling for clients with uncomplicated or well-managed health issues. Clients with complex nutrition and/or medical problems are referred to other health professionals or a higher-level Nutritionist. Work may include other related assignments as determined by management. Work is performed under the general supervision of the WIC Director / Nutritionist II.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
  • Assesses the nutritional status of clients.
  • Provides nutrition education and counseling to clients; develops goals with clients based upon assessment results.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to medical providers and social service programs based on findings from the medical and eco-social assessment.
  • Provides clients information about various food packages and formulas; prescribes and discusses appropriate food packages for clients based on medical needs of clients.
  • Issues food packages and breastfeeding supplies.
  • Audits the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program.
  • Records nutritional data and prepares computerized chart.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of County and department policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of program manuals.
  • Thorough knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Crossroads and NC Tracks, etc.).
  • Thorough knowledge in the use of the equipment required for the position.
  • Ability to interpret nutritional and dietary data.
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with patients and personnel.
  • Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, nurse practitioners, associates, consultants, and the general public.
  • Specialized knowledge in principles and application of nutrition and dietetics to improve health outcomes.
  • Knowledge of relevant medical terminology and skill in documenting in the medical record.
  • Ability to deliver nutrition education programs and communicate with individuals and small groups.
  • General knowledge of behavior change theory and learning theory.
  • General knowledge of life-cycle nutrition with preference for knowledge of maternal and child nutrition, and lactation.
Physical Requirements
  • Work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Work occasionally requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, frequently requires repetitive motions, and regularly requires speaking or hearing.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and using of measuring devices.
  • Work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education- approved Didactic Program in Dietetics; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university.
