Nutritionist (CPA) - Chenango County
Program: Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Reports to: WIC Director
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday 11am-7pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 8am-4pm; 37.5 hours per week
Starting Wage: $25 - $26 per hour
Location: 26 Conkey Avenue, Suite 301, Norwich, NY 13815 - Chenango County
Job Function: Provides nutrition education and counseling to low-income women, infants, and children with dietary, medical, and health risks by performing the following duties.
Nutritionist Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Conduct participant-centered nutritional assessments, including anthropometry, hematology, dietary, medical, and health information necessary for the WIC certification process.
- Provide and document participant-centered nutrition education/counseling (individual/family sessions and facilitated group discussions) for participants.
- Identify high-risk criteria and the need for an Individual Care Plan (ICP).
- Provide participant-centered counseling for high-risk participants, ensure continuity of care, and determine when an ICP can be closed.
- Coordinate nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, responsive to the needs and interests of each high-risk participant.
- Refer high-risk participants to other health-related and social services as necessary.
- Track high-risk participants’ progress and document outcomes.
- Tailor and authorize food packages for participants.
- Review and approve formula requests and Medical Documentation Forms.
- Conduct breastfeeding assessments and provide counseling to help mothers initiate and continue breastfeeding.
- Provide referrals to community services, including early childhood development, mental health, substance abuse programs, social services, and food pantries.
- Screen for lead and immunizations and provide appropriate referrals.
- Ensure the efficient flow of assessment and education processes.
- Provide oversight and guidance to CPA and Nutrition Assistant staff.
- Lead in planning, conducting, and evaluating participant-centered nutrition services.
- Assist in orienting, training, and mentoring new staff.
- Develop, conduct, and evaluate nutrition training for LA staff.
- Assist with developing the Annual Nutrition Services Plan.
- Assist with outreach activities and drive the outreach van as needed.
- Work with the Nutrition Coordinator to plan, evaluate, and order educational materials.
- Participate in outreach and community events as needed.
- Collaborate with the WIC Director to track data, review clinic flow, and manage other tasks.
- Attend trainings for professional development, including out-of-town travel when necessary.
- Complete required hours for Continuing Education as per policies.
- Provide education and support on the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and issue benefits to participants.
Additional Tasks:
- Answer phones, schedule appointments, and address questions about WIC eligibility and procedures.
- Check voicemail and respond promptly, transferring calls as appropriate.
- Initiate the certification process by collecting data, creating or locating records.
- Determine residency and income eligibility following established procedures.
- Review Rights and Responsibilities with participants.
- Conduct program orientation, including instructions on using the EBT card, issuing eWIC cards, and explaining program benefits.
Qualifications and Requirements: Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, OR Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (DTR/NDTR), OR Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field with at least 6 credit hours in nutrition. Must be approved as a CPA by the NYS Health Department. Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
