Job description

Under general supervision at the full-performance level, these positions perform paraprofessional work for the West Virginia Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program including determining income eligibility, health screening, referrals to health and human service programs, basic nutrition education and breastfeeding education. They provide basic nutrition and breastfeeding assessment, education and counseling to groups and individuals. These positions certify participants in the WIC program and provide breastfeeding counseling to WIC participants which are governed by federal regulations and state and local policies and procedures. These positions may require travel. Perform related work as required.

Key Responsibilities
Clerical & Administrative Support (15%)
  • Maintain participant files, records, forms, and documentation.
  • Enter and update information in required systems.
  • Provide general office and program support.
Breastfeeding & Nutrition Support (15%)
  • Assist WIC participants with breastfeeding questions and basic nutrition needs.
  • Provide nutrition education within established guidelines.
  • Share appropriate resources and educational materials.
Eligibility & Certification Support (15%)
  • Verify applicant income, household information, and residency.
  • Review required documentation for certification and recertification.
  • Ensure eligibility information is accurately recorded.
Immunization Screening & Referrals (15%)
  • Screen participants for immunization status.
  • Provide referrals to healthcare providers and community resources.
  • Complete follow-up activities and document contacts according to program requirements.
Participant Information & Follow-Up (15%)
  • Collect socioeconomic, health, and dietary information from applicants.
  • Conduct follow-up contacts as needed.
  • Communicate with participants regarding services, appointments, and program needs.
Community Outreach & Program Promotion (15%)
  • Conduct outreach to increase awareness and participation in WIC.
  • Maintain relationships with partner organizations and WIC-authorized vendors.
  • Deliver educational presentations to community groups.
  • Represent the WIC program at events and outreach activities.
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
  • Assist with special projects, program activities, and agency initiatives.
  • Support other staff and program areas as needed.
  • Perform duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in a health, nutrition, child development, or behavioral sciences field.

OR

Substitution: Successful completion of 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university with at least 12 semester hours in health, nutrition, child development, or behavioral sciences field may substitute for the required training.
