Job summary

The Archdiocese of St. Louis is seeking a Preschool Substitute Teacher for Ste Genevieve Catholic Church Preschool. You will provide a nurturing, safe, and developmentally supportive learning environment for children ages 3-5 when the regular teacher is absent.

Responsibilities include following lesson plans, supporting early growth, maintaining routines, and ensuring each child’s well-being. A warm, patient, and adaptable educator will thrive here.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; coursework or degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred.
• A substitute teaching permit may be required depending on local regulations.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
• Prior experience with preschool-aged children in childcare or classroom settings preferred.
• Patience, warmth, and a nurturing approach when working with young children.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to follow routines, maintain structure, and adapt to active classrooms.
• Basic understanding of child development and age-appropriate instructional strategies.

Responsibilities

• Follow lesson plans and routines provided by the preschool teacher or staff.
• Use age-appropriate, play-based activities to support early literacy, numeracy, and motor skills.
• Encourage creativity through storytelling, singing, hands-on activities, and guided play.
• Adapt activities to meet individual developmental needs and learning styles.
• Maintain a warm, respectful classroom environment supporting social and emotional growth.
• Establish and reinforce routines, including transitions and quiet time.
• Use positive behavior guidance and redirect misbehavior gently.
• Promote cooperation and positive peer interactions.
• Provide encouragement and individual attention as needed.
