A Brief Overview

Facilitates movement of patients to appropriate and alternate levels of care as needed and has the authority to facilitate the opening of transitional beds/unit in order to maximize patient throughput and ease excess capacity. This also includes patient access, transfer center, and system-wide coordination. Takes physician orders and completes admission assessments and other admission activities during times of unusually high activity. Maximizes patient throughput and access by working with Nursing divisions, Surgical areas, and ED to adequately plan for admissions and discharges. Ensures adequate staffing in all hospital areas and implements staffing changes quickly. Manages fluctuations in patient census utilizing productivity targets, staffing grids, and appropriate resources. Promotes Relationship Based Care and models the UH essential behaviors during all interactions with patients, physicians, and employees.

What You Will Do

  • Manages patient flow and routine clinical operations by procuring resources necessary for patient care. Collaborates with the charge nurse to ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Assumes leadership in the absence of Administration during after hours, weekends, and holidays. Provides leadership for nursing staff when Clinical Managers, Directors, and VP are unavailable.
  • Leads the daily safety huddle and partners with the Emergency Department (ED) during defined overcrowding stages (yellow, orange, red). May conduct rounds in the ED more than once per shift.
  • Makes critical staffing decisions, including movement of RNs, Sitters, CTA's, etc., as necessary.
  • Assesses ED needs during surges and assists with patient flow and staffing in the department.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and manages sitter and restraint utilization.
  • Ensures provision of care, restraint use, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Administers rapid response protocols and responds to BAT, traumas, and codes (blue, violent, etc.).
  • Provides administrative, operational, and clinical support to patient care areas and management.
  • Implements systems to support patient care improvements.
  • Maintains the environment of care and supports clinical staff through visibility, coaching, and assistance with patient care activities.
  • Addresses staff concerns, leads change, and fosters a positive work environment.
  • Serves as disaster management lead in the absence of leadership. Ensures service recovery to maintain positive patient and family experiences.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Refers to departmental documentation during orientation for specific duties.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with policies, including annual training and UH Code of Conduct.
